That type of watch probably isn't really that popular. The explorer is sought-after in vintage circles but much less so by people who collect modern watches.

I'm not so sure this is correct amongst the younger watch crowd that is heavily informed by reddit, instagram, youtube, tik tok- whatever the young internet "I belong to the wristwatch culture and it must look like X" is called. I see a lot of the same take that @ErichKeane essentially asserted: it's popular amongst this watch group because it's considered an essential entry level Rolex.

As far as I understand it, if you didn't start with a Seiko or G shock, then get yourself a Tissot, purchase an explorer, and then move up to simultaneously buying a Speedmaster and Submariner- well, then your progression within the young watch culture was wrong and you'll likely be seen as a weirdo, outcast, and whackjob.

BUT if you did follow that progression then by golly, you're free to purchase anything you want at that point... as long as you've already got your dress watch base covered.

I'm hoping Omega doesn't go crazy with the dial colours as the ID Guy is predicting, and just keep it a basic grey/black, blue or brown. After all, the Railmaster is meant to be a no frills tool watch.

ID Guy's brown and blue mocks ups looked good.....to be honest...would love an anti-Explorer......a white/albino Railmaster....馃槑馃憤

Sigh.

Another half arsed Railmaster reissue, stuck in the shadow of the Aqua Terra with the same case and bracelet verbatim, and weird, divisive dials. They just don't want to give this model a real chance and just release it as an actual classic tool watch, do they?

My prediction is we get articles about how the Railmaster is a fun, underrated classic (again) and then nobody buys it (again) because it looks weird (again) and it gets discontinued (again). Meanwhile the Explorer, virtually unchanged for 30 years, continues to sell hand over fist.

EDIT: To be positive, I like that they've gone back to the second gen indices, numerals and hands, but the proportions of the hands are a bit more modern, and the dial text is simpler like the first gens and trilogy reissue. If the dial was plain black, I'd probably like it. There are good elements, I just think the package is lazy and disappointing. Couldn't even brush the bracelet?

For the Speedy, Omega trumpets the space program history. I find it a bit weird that for the railmaster - other than the name - they don鈥檛 trade on the nostalgia of the railway history for marketing and packaging. Maybe they will this time?

Hopefully there鈥檚 going to be a variation with a plain black dial.

Preferably 36mm.

Probably because there's no big railway moment compared to the space program (moon landing and Apollo 13).

Absolutely no chance of a 36 mm IMO. The leaked watch looks to just use the exact current generation Aqua Terra case and bracelet. The men's sizes for the AT are 38 for small and 41 for large. My guess is 38 only or 38 and 41 options.

Black dial is possible, but I wonder if it would be too similar to the second gen and that's why they're not doing it? Selfishly, that probably protects (or inflates!) my resale on my 36 mm, but really as a watch enthusiast I just want to see Omega release awesome watches, hence my disappointment.

Agreed, except, I had my wish, I would have broad arrow HOUR handset, like the Trilogy versions and a 36mm case size. If I really had my way, I would prefer a Ranchero (2990 or 2996) reissue complete a manual wound movement. If they want to compete with the Rolex Explorer, they need to try to NOT get too creative with dial variants and keep it clean and legible. And yeah, I hope they don't bling it up with a polished bracelet and the like.

Yeah I think the broad arrow hour is better too, I actually mocked it up on the forum a month ago, before the leak was known. I'll share it again below, I still prefer mine with the all brushed case/bracelet and standard dial text layout, but I assumed they wouldn't do lumed numerals and they actually have so that's one thing I like better on the real fourth gen.

To give Omega some credit, the arrow minute hand has been around for decades now, and people love the AT with it. It's a reasonable decision to stick with it at this point.

It seems like Omega don't want to compete with the Explorer, at least not with the Railmaster. I wonder if they see the Aqua Terra as their Explorer alternative. I absolutely don't, it's too dressy, but it's the only thing I can think of as to why they keep trying to make the Railmaster creative and fun instead of a tool watch aesthetic.

The leak already confirms it will have a polished bezel, partially polished lugs and a polished centre link. As in, it's literally a 38 mm Aqua Terra with a different dial and hands and no date complication. Hence my complaint that it's lazy. Granted, the second gen is generally considered to be the best and that too was an AT variation. But at least the first gen AT had a fully brushed bracelet.

I don't know if anyone has confirmed what the caseback looks like, perhaps @Quisquetempus might be willing. But I'd like it to have a thin solid caseback, which means it will probably have an exhibition. 馃槣

I agree with you. Obviously, omega don't want to compete with the Explorer. Except the fun color dial, the new Railmaster is an aquaterra without the date. It look like the Railmaster is the answer to to a less dressy aquaterra and not just a simple tool watch.

I agree with you, omega doesn't want to compete with the Explorer. The new Railmaster is an aquaterra 'less' dressy. I mean no date but a fun dial color. I don't look at it as a simple tool watch but as an option in the aquaterra line.
