路That type of watch probably isn't really that popular. The explorer is sought-after in vintage circles but much less so by people who collect modern watches.
I'm not so sure this is correct amongst the younger watch crowd that is heavily informed by reddit, instagram, youtube, tik tok- whatever the young internet "I belong to the wristwatch culture and it must look like X" is called. I see a lot of the same take that @ErichKeane essentially asserted: it's popular amongst this watch group because it's considered an essential entry level Rolex.
As far as I understand it, if you didn't start with a Seiko or G shock, then get yourself a Tissot, purchase an explorer, and then move up to simultaneously buying a Speedmaster and Submariner- well, then your progression within the young watch culture was wrong and you'll likely be seen as a weirdo, outcast, and whackjob.
BUT if you did follow that progression then by golly, you're free to purchase anything you want at that point... as long as you've already got your dress watch base covered.
