Ok, all things being equal (but, that’s an impossibility as there is always some sort of bias, conscious or not), then I’d go with the 5513. Not long ago you could buy these later era, glossy dials for not much $ and the market was full of them. Take a look at the landscape now and it’s pretty dried up. At any rate, I have a 1986 production year 5513 and love it...so there’s my bias. 😉

I will admit - I do really like the acrylic look on the 5513. Also the flat 4 on the bezel 🥰
The distortion when you look at the dial gets me every time

Thank you. What a difference 3-4 years makes.

Would you buy a late 5513 or an an early T<25 14060?
You can't really go wrong with either, they're both iconic watches. Obviously condition and service history are important, bearing in mind that even the newest 14060 is now over 20 years old. I have a 1996 14060 with tritium lume (dead now!) and love it, so I´d go for a good 14060. But I'm biased! I do love the older Subs with acrylic crystals...they have a certain charm, imho! Good luck!

5513 for the case and crystal

I'm following this thread as I'm interested in these two as well.

I know the bezel is different... But is the case itself different? I thought they were the same.

I think the two references have different cases but someone correct me if I’m wrong.

14060 case has different chamfering on the side, crownguard side profiles are different and thinner lugs. It wears heavier but I imagine that may be because they went to a superior stainless material (904L)

As an additional side note, another differentiation is that the the 14060 insert is unidirectional vs bidirectional on the 5513

...5513 is an already iconic watch. I'd say it also depends on whether you already have other (vintage) watches. If you already have a model that satisfies your need for tritium and maybe a matte dial, there are also a few things that speak for the 14060. Better movement, and also it is really clean and cool. And undestroyable! I enjoy mine almost every day - it's my daily wearer, especially when i go out for rougher tasks...it goes tooth beach, shooting, racing, and....table soccer! 😉

An acrylic crystal is extremely sexy - but it's easily scratched...so if you're looking for a daily wearer - at least consider these things. (not saying you can't wear a 5513 as a daily wearer...but...) Good luck and enjoy the hunt!!

Question: can you use polywatch on acrylic?

Minefield though it is, with an educated eye, research, exhaustive searching and patience, a matte dialed 5513 might be possible. I do see the occasional, nice ones come up in the usual places. Some extra bucks upfront on your next watch can be well worth it, if you can swing it. I don’t regret that I went that way.

I looked at those 80’s 5513’s, with their unsport-watch gold surrounds, and decided it was important enough to me that I’d pay more to steer clear of them. I’m not interested in those sapphire 14060s; they’re just different watches to me.

I love my matte 5513, but I confess I’m suffering from an extreme prejudice in this instance. It’s less flashy than either the white gold 5513 or the 14060, which seems more like a tool watch to me.

a ft first 5513 matte dial is my 1st choice but trying too find a nice example at a competitive price has been challenging
