Hi guys

I need some help with this 1675 from 1978. I'm not home with Rolex watches but I'm on a hunt for a nice 1675. This one is offered from a private collector and I would really appreciate your comments. The link and ends are correct what I understand but when it comes to dial MK version I'm totally lost. The case? Does it look overpolished, too beaten up? Many thanks!!!!

Hi - it's an MK5 which is correct for a '78 (should be 5M serial). The case looks over-polished and the hour and second hand tritium have cracks, both of which detract from it's value. The 78360 bracelet with 580 end-links are period correct as well.

I would only proceed if the price is appropriately adjusted for the above stated flaws.

What he said. It looks likes the chamfers are still somewhat there, and a recut from LAWW would do this watch wonders IMO...not that I am a fan of recuts, but sometimes they improve a piece.

I like it...what is the price?

Yes, the down side is the case and I honestly think that is more just worn out than overpolished but I could be wrong. Anyhow everything else especially the dial is quite attractive. The serial number is 5,7 mil. When it comes to price I'm aiming for 6000 usd. I do count on additional cost for service around 500. Sounds fair?

The chamfers are still there, could just be honest wear, lugs look really fat and lug holes are sharp.

$6K? Shit man...I would pay a lot more than that.

Well that is the aim but I was a bit too fast when converting it is 6000 euro so more like 7k USD and add 500 for service so total cost will be around 7500 USD. Still attractive? I feel like I will not loose money anyhow even if i pay a few hundreds extra since I'm planning to keep it for a while. But you know when you jus see the watch and you really like it, that is how i feel about this one. Also I know that no dealer hands have been involved in the story and that makes me happy.

One last question. 6 and 9 on the date wheel are opened. Is that correct? You guys just convinced me to purchase my first GMT .

$7.5K is still reasonable, but pushing border line.... it should have a silver date disc, with open 6 & 9's. At that price for it to be a good deal, the hands would need to be authenticated (I'm highly suspect they're original to the watch.)

Now you got me worried about the hands. You think they are replaced or relumed? The disk is silver and the 6 and 9 are open .
7k is the max offer I will give so lets see if it gets trough. I'm getting exited about this. Would be a very nice Christmas gift to my self.

Don't worry about the hands. At this price you can get color matched or buy another set.

Rolex hands are much easier to sort than others, and these don't look too bad to me.

Well in that case, throw in another $500-$1,000 for tritium hands and hope you can find a match. Sorry, but that's approaching decent money for an MK5. I would not color match hands on a $7.5K watch. If you include a case refinish, that's another $500, then you're well in the 9's for this watch....you be the judge.

Good luck!

Is there any way I can find out if the hands are replacement? Should they glow in the dark? I tried the whole watch in the pitch dark room (toilet) and absolutely no glow anywhere.
Will ask for better close up pictures as well..

Hands are an obvious mismatch. Hour and second obviously redone, see the cracking. Minute most likely as well. 24H hand may be aftermarket and definitely does not have the same hue as the others unless it is the angle the picture was taken..
I personally would want to see a movement shot and a better shot of the reference numbers but case appears good, no red flags for me base on those pictures. Unlike other buyers on this forum that I have warned but i never received a courtesy response back heeding my opinion.
Yes, hands are getting very difficult to source.
But you may be able to have someone color match those to your plots.
Listen, that is a very nice watch. Try to find one at $7.5 without needing some attention but with a solid case as that, the rest can be worked on...
You are good with taking into account a service, some crud on the case shows lack of attention to it.
A nice red fat font insert another $1k plus.
Good Luck!

Your opinion is very much appreciated! The hands do have a very slight colour mismatch (hour and minute) especially. I'm ok with that for now and will examine it more later when the watch falls in to my hands.
What makes me very happy is that you think that case is fairly ok. I'm aware that find one in mint condition will at least double the price tag so I'm ok with that too. It was obvious when I examined the watch that this piece was someone's every day watch for quite some time.

Movement shot will be uploaded tomorrow and I'm a bit nervous about that.
I have a better shot of the serial number. All in all I feel confident pulling the trigger thanks to you guys and I'm very grateful for your help. I'm not looking to make instant money on this watch but I do want to spend money wise since my budget is limited.

Cheers!

The case is pretty nice, and I agree with you that it looks more worn than overpolished. That is a good price if you can get it for that. Snatch it up. As you probably know, excellent examples are $10k+.

The case to me looks good, still plenty of meat. Polished in the past but definitely not overly. If the movement checks out, $7 is a good buy.

Here are finally some pictures of the movement and case back as well. Case back is signed 1675 but no Year stamp which what I understand ceased during early 70s. I assume that this is correct.
The calibre on the other hand is to my surprise 1570 instead for 1575. According to Fratello watches article I read, it seems to be quite usual that Rolex used left overs from cal 1570 even for the 1575. Should I be nervous and worried about this???

Other than that, movement is dirty but it looks fine to me. No rust, just dirt and some wear/dirt on the rotor. Ones serviced it should be just fine.

Again, thanks for your valuable comments and input! Santa is knocking on the door 😀 I think I see an Gmt on his wrist..

movement looks a little dirty, maybe some slight pitting on case back, hard to see...

So do you own it now???

A majority of the vintage Rolex I own, I bought without ever seeing the inside of the caseback or movement!

Buy already😝

Case-back is period correct for this watch. I think you have a pretty good idea of what you are getting with this watch.

Just buy it, and enjoy.
