Pituophis - this little gopher snake was sheltering from cold wind and rain under a rock along the John Day river. I was looking for skipping Stones when I found him; I didn't take any pictures of it but my children and their cousins were kind enough to build him a rock shelter which he happily relocated to.

Rice is growing

It’s funny. I was reading some history book a while back and it pointed out one of the main reasons rice became such a staple in Asia was taxes. Other crops would allow a farmer to plant for a season and take off. Making it difficult for the emperors tax men to to get the goods. Rice farming makes farmers stick around the area. So the emperors tax men could easily find them if need be. One of those strange things that stuck in my head.

This video was posted on a local news blog. It was taken just down the road from our house. It is an enjoyable watch. Come for the bucks stay for the mamma fox and her kits.

Most probably a Common Blue Damselfly (Enellagma Cyathigerum) although there a couple of similar species occasionally found locally. There were 10-12 around this little pond.

Trout food.
This pond has a small flow through it in winter but is stagnant in summer and some years dries out completely, not a place you'd find trout. There was a good splash in the reeds as I walked up to it, I'd guess at Water Vole because I've seen them in another stream about 150m away.

There are Common Newt in there too:
June 2019.

They are quite fun to watch because they use their tails to swim and look like fish until almost reaching their destination when four legs suddenly appear like the landing gear of an aircraft.

Ah, I'm guessing you are not in North America then. Sorry made an assumption...
