The Robin's nests have returned. New location this year, and not ideal - on top of the deck rail right beside the BBQ, so we will have to wait until they are done to do much cooking out there:

3 eggs inside, so we'll hope to have 3 birds at the end...

Update...3 chicks!

Second nest in some yews...it was looking promising...

Unfortunately we came out one morning and the nest was dumped on the ground and all 3 chicks were dead. 🙁

Toad season - nearly ran this guy over cutting the grass...but he's okay.

One of my sons is currently fairly obsessed with volcanic eruptions and we were talking about Pompeii and St Helens when I realized that today is the 45th anniversary of its eruption.

(Photos taken by John Chriastensen in 1980 from Mt. Adams)

And this one's mine.

If you haven't already thought about it, you can climb it. I did it on my 50th and it was tough, but doable. It's quite the view looking around and down in. Probably too soon to take your son but something to consider (if you haven't already.)

Spring!

We've had bumblebees here for about 20 years now, suspected of being introduced by tomato growers. While very cute in the garden they are creating havoc in bush and farmland by pollinating plants that have had no natural pollinator before their introduction. Amongst other previously innocuous plants foxglove is now running rampant in bush and farmland. It's a problem because it is exlusionary, it contains digitalis and is attractive to livestock when wilted which makes it very dangerous on farmland and we have no natural controls here.

Fascinating. The butterfly effect.

And less than a month later, all 3 Robins are well and have left the nest!

We do have another nest with chicks in it that I'll try to get photos of later.

We haven't seen any grey squirrels in our yard until today. This guy found a nice place to sun himself.

Great shots! What kind of camera / lens did you use?

Thanks. I have a bunch of crappy ones I don't post too.

Galaxy S24 Ultra. The bees were so busy they ignored me and I could get within a couple feet. Had some lucky sunshine too. Sometimes I need to adjust the light afterwards but only had to crop a few.

This guy was back today and decided to go to town on the wild strawberries I planted. It was hard to count, but I watched him eat over 20 of them. I can't believe they all fit in his little belly.
