Ok here's a couple of clues.. For the most part, he worked in partnership with another director, they made a number of wonderful, mostly (just) post Second World War; this movie however got the director (working on his own) blacklisted from the film industry, and struggled to make another film.

Absolutely right on!!
Fantastic film, with wonderful cinematography, sadly the controversial nature of it completely ruined his career Michael Powell's career, him and Pressburger, made some wonderful films during and postwar.
