My very first Omega!!!

Hello everyone!

New member here, just signed on and wanted to share my experience with my newly acquired Omega SpeedMaster Professional sapphire sandwich that was given to me as a gift last month.

The following is the story on how I received it......

My nephew (who has quite an impressive watch collection) had called me back in early September and asked me for my opinion on a couple of watches that he was contemplating on buying. As always I am honored to oblige.

He always told me that his watch enthusiasm generated from me. During that initial call he mentions to me that my birthday is coming up (the next month at the end of October) and that he wanted to take me and my wife out to dinner to celebrate. I say thank you but that really wasn’t necessary. But he insists, so let’s setup a date and time. We settled on Saturday October 15.

Well October 15th arrives and my wife and I drive up to where he lives and we meet him at his house and we take off from there. He explains to me that he made reservations at this high end restaurant, etc. but that he wanted to first make a stop by this particular jewelry store (where he basically has purchased all his impressive watches such as Rolex, Omega, Tudor, etc.) because he reminds me of that conversation that we had last month about making a choice on a Omega watch, etc.

I tell him yes I remember and that sure lets go. By this time I’m getting excited because I had never been to this particular place that he has always described to me with all its high end watches and jewelry and how well they take care of the customers, offer VIP treatment, offer cocktails, wine, etc.

As we arrive, we walk up to the door and my nephew rings a doorbell, they quickly open the door and greet us with a smile as we walk in and after a couple of minutes they offer us a glass of champagne….we say yes of course.

While strolling through the store sipping on champagne (my wife quickly exits to check out the jewelry, you know women's stuff) my nephew and I start to look at different watches, Tudor, Rolex, Omega and we discuss the features and styles of the watches, etc.

Then we come to the Omega watches that he had asked for my opinion about and as we are looking at them, discussing them, etc. the salesman (who by the way is very knowledgeable on time pieces) ask me to try one on.

Now at this point I am thinking to myself that yeah sure I’ll try one on but that I am only here for my nephew and not buying for myself.

He kindly asked me to please remove the watch that I have on (Wempe Zeitmeister Chronometer) my wrist and as I put it down he starts to examine it and without me even mentioning where its from, brand name, style, etc. he starts telling about it! He knew a lot about that particular brand to my astonishment!

Back to the Omegas…he quickly adjust the strap and puts it on my wrist….then he follows up with…”Well how does it feel”?

The Omega watches that we are discussing are the SpeedMaster and the SeaMaster. Both have different straps, metal and leather, etc. and the one I had on my wrist was the SpeedMaster with its black leather and nylon strap. I say "it feels and looks really cool" I tell him. Then I start to take it off.

Just then he has the SeaMaster ready for me to put on? I'm thinking........no I really don’t want to try on another because now I am feeling like I am being teased! LOL!

I try that one on and yes it also feels good but for some reason or another my eyes keep gravitating to the SpeedMaster but with the metal strap! The salesman quickly notice’s that to as well and ask me to just try it on. He goes on to explain about the strap and how if removing a few links…the strap would fit me well, etc. I don’t disagree but I tell him that wouldn’t be necessary since I am not the one buying today.

He is a bit insistent and says that it would not take long to remove the links, etc. and that really it’s not a big deal, etc. He quickly removes the links then says …”Here now try it on…how does it feel now”?

Well of course I like it!…..I like it a lot! Now during all this time I happen to sense and notice my wife and my nephew are practically standing right there behind me….but I really had not noticed that before. Since all my attention is focused on the Omega's and listening to the salesman, etc. Then I hear my nephew ask me..”Well uncle what do you think?” I respond back with…”Yeah I really like the look and the feel of it”!.........He then follows up and says…”Well good because it’s yours!......I say…WHAT!?

Right then and there my heart stops! As my wife describes it she said the look on my face was priceless! My nephew tells me that its an early birthday gift from him and that its now mine. I say that it is nice and all and appreciate his generosity but that this is a very expensive gift.

He tells me don’t worry about that, that he is honored to give me such a gift. The salesman chimes in and tells me…”Looks like it’s yours now” with a smile.

Of course the grin on my face was from ear to ear and I felt like a kid in a candy store! I couldn’t thank my nephew enough. My wife was in on it all this time and already knew about it all. I was just so taken aback by it all and it was such an overwhelming experience to say the least. One that I’ll never forget!

Yes it was a very good early birthday celebration gift!

EDIT: (By the way, forgot to mention, that my wife did not leave that store empty handed when we left......she walked out with a gold necklace and a pair of gold and diamond earrings as well. You know a woman can't walk into a jewelry store and walk out empty handed.)

My apologies for the long story but it had to be told.

The only nephews I have wouldn't give a whit about a nice watch, they just aren't important to them. Congrats on your new watch.

Congratulations! Our nephew spent the weekend. I don’t think he brought his wallet, wore sweat pants, farted in front of my wife, and left the guest house looking like a frat house. I am not joking. Cherish your watch and your nephew.

Great story.

I am curious though if a dealer would ever remove links on a watch you may not buy. I never thought to ask to see exactly how it would fit - I figured you would have to buy it to get links removed.
