My uncle’s watch- how much is it worth? Is it a Speedmaster?

Hi everyone, my uncle has a Seiko dive watch from the late 70s or early 80s- reference 6309-7049. I know it’s not a super expensive watch and have found some unsold examples on Ebay for BIN prices of around 600 dollars- but I’m still curious, could anyone provide a finer appraisal?

Seems to work like a charm, it started running after I turned it around, and carried it around in search of my loupe.
A couple pictures below. Sorry no inside pics, he wanted to get some tool to open it but I strictly forbade him to do so.

Many thanks for any help you can provide,
PS this is not a hidden sales post 😜

300-600eur would be my appraisal imho, the bezel looks to be original (it is often mangled and replaced). Not a super expensive watch, but tricky to find in such a good shape. Most are beaten up or modified.

Our friend, Jim @JimInOz, is super with these. He'll be up in a few hours and I look forward to his opinion!
Seems a bit chunky on your petite wrist, Syrte, hope your Uncle fits it.

Thanks dear gentlemen, @UncleBuck yes my uncle has a larger wrist 😁
Quite disheartening I’m getting less replies to this query than the usual Uncle watch post…. Perhaps a little bit of click bait in the title will turn this around? 😉

US$250-400 depending on condition - based solely on a quick look at recent asking prices & a few sales.

Of course as a family keepsake, price is not equal to value.

👍

Thank you very much, it’s not really a family keepsake though, my uncle doesn’t use it very much and no one in the family really cares about watches. (Except me of course).
Maybe someone would like to have it someday though, and he has no plan to sell it.

I'm afraid on the lower end in my area as Seiko is not recognized as upper quality and on par with Citizen, Invicta, etc.
I bought a similar watch for $50US that needed repair and sent it to Jim hoping to keep him off the Lagavulin for a few days but I think he fixed it in minutes and the Lagavulin may have taken a beating, I'm afraid.

I think your wrist shot puts it in the category of “is this watch too big for me?”

I was prepared with a pithy “demand for appraisal” response till I realized it was @Syrte. 😁

I don’t need anyone’s opinion on the matter though- I have my own 😁

Yeah, when I heard my uncle had an old Seiko watch and he was curious about what I thought of it, the uncle post was irresistible of course. I actually like those uncle posts, so it was only fitting for me to have my own 😀

Increasing hard to find in unmolested condition like this. These are often found with aftermarket parts. This one has a very nice original bezel. From '78 by the way. $500-550 I'd think.

Good Morning Jimbo and Syrte and others.
What a nice introduction to the day, an "UncleWatch" thread with a nice watch for a change.

As noted, the watch is a very nice 6309-7049 made for the North American market in June 1978. Japan and ROW market watches were identical but marked 6309-7040.

It all looks to be completely original (bracelet excluded) and has a very clean "Suwa" dial (the Suwa mark just below the 150m). These were used up until about 1980, then the Suwa mark wasn't used on the dial.

The condition is excellent and would take very little to bring it up to "NOS" 😁.

Calling @omegaswisst, I'm sure you like to see this one mate 😉.

Edit: No need for your Uncle to open it, here's one I prepared earlier.

My guess is even with the later production the condition might push past 1k.

these Turtles are popular and good unmolested ones are very hard to find.

I can’t believe no one has ID’d this yet: yes it’s definitely a Speedmaster. Congrats on the find.
