My special Omega

Hi everyone, I’m a newbie so please be gentle. My story is that my older brother died a few weeks ago and l have inherited Dads watch which was left to him when Dad died over 40 years ago. The background to the watch is that Dad bought it in the Middle East, when serving with the British Army during WW11. Dad was shipped off to war in 1939 and didn’t come home until 1946, missing the birth of my brother and only meeting him when he was 6, on his return home. I have been able to just about read the case serial number which is 10354512, and from that I believe that it was made in 1944. I’ve had some difficulty finding exactly the same watch, as the face includes the words “Fab Suisse”, which I haven’t been able to see elsewhere. Dad wore the watch every day throughout my childhood, I can’t remember him not wearing it but he would NEVER talk about the war or his time in Egypt, Libya, Turkey, Palestine etc. I’m not confident to try and take off the back, so any information that you wise guys could offer would be much appreciated, especially production, sale, rarity etc, thank you all. The watch is a precious reminder of Dad and one of only a few items I have from him and so I have no intention to get rid of it but if I could get some indication of value, that would be helpful.

Fab Suisse is typically seen on Omegas sold in France or presumably in the French sphere of influence, which would include Syria and many other parts of Africa and the Middle East. As you say, this was purchased rather than issued.

Hi Padders, I’m assuming that it was purchased and not issued, I don’t really have any info on that, except that the research I’ve done so far suggests that it doesn’t look like a military issue model.

Yes, there are a number of other Jaguar owners here on the forum as well.

The reference for these is CK2175 fitted with the caliber 23.4 SC T1 movement.

The serial number on mine dates to ca 1943 and I would suspect yours would be as well. The serial number on the movement is used to date these not the case number.

Thanks for the info, already I know more about Dads watch than I have done in the last 72 years!
Is it easy to remove the back or would I be risking damage to it?

Welcome to the Forum, and my condolences for your loss.

I'd say if you have never opened a watch before, best to leave it to a watchmaker. If you provide your location (city) we might be able to suggest a watchmaker that would be able to help.

As for value, priceless, since this is a family piece with known history. It would be well worth giving it a sympathetic service (no polishing, no dial work) to ensure the movement is properly cleaned and lubricated. It is very likely the lubricants have dried up and you risk damage to internal workings if you run it without a service.
