Been reading the forum for several months, first real post so I'll introduce myself.

My name is Eric, I'm a 31 year old design engineer living in Indiana. I've been a massive fan of Speedmaster Professionals since college. I went to Purdue University, alma mater of 23 astronauts, and always enjoyed watch spotting when they'd come back to campus.

We had our first child towards the end of 2015. Shortly after he was born my dad sat down with me and said "I'd like to buy Isaiah an Omega, would you mind taking care of it for a couple of years?". I was over the moon...get it? I'm planning on taking a picture of him and the watch at least every year until he's ready for it (high school graduation, college graduation, wedding, etc).

I just stumbled on this story... What a great gift for a son, or a grandson. The great thing about Speedys currently is that they are still on the affordable end of the spectrum and yet one of the most iconic watches made. I look forward to passing my Speemaster Pro on to my son when he's old enough to appreciate it.

Great thread still. I might need some advise, other than the 18 year old birth-year watch.

I'm sitting on a V-serial Rolex Explorer II 16570 black dial that's earmarked for my son's college graduation in 4 years. He loves the black dial version as much as I like the Polar version. He already received a 1998 birth-year SMP Bond quartz for his 18th birthday this past January, and a new SMPc chronograph for becoming an Eagle Scout 2 years ago. But now he graduates from high school this May.

His high school graduation watch is supposed to be a brand new Seiko Astron Solar GPS chronograph with PVD finish that he really liked at the store (not cheap). Now I'm trying to decide if that's a good enough watch for this milestone. But if I give him one of my nicer watches that he likes instead of the Astron (Explorer II, SMPc, Ti SMP chronograph, or 62 De Ville), I know that I wont wear the Astron very much.

It's too late return it without badly embarrassing myself with my dealer - I've returned a few too many after a change of heart. I exchanged a 4-week old used Luminox Colormark black-out chronograph at the AD plus $1K for the new Astron. Should I still give him the Astron for his HS Graduation as planned (my favorite option), or upgrade the gift to one of the nicer ones sooner than later? Another option is the De Ville and the Astron both.

He's pretty mature and only plans to take his two Luminox watches to the school dorm (1 diver 1 dressy). His others will stay safe at home, to be be enjoyed on weekends when he visits and over the summer. If his watches at school are too nice I worry that people might take advantage of him while he's away (or mug him).

All are excellent choices.

My opinion for a first year college student would be the Astron since he already has the bond Omega. I love the idea of the DeVille but he might not get as much use out of it. Plus, if you keep the DeVille, it's an excuse for him to need to come home to borrow it for internship interviews.

Great tradition of taking a picture every year with the Speedy. He'll absolutely love that later in life! Very cool dad too. Congrats all the way around!

An excellent review. Your son will love the Omega when he is old enough to wear it. I suppose you love wearing the watch now. Personally, I am not a big fan of wearing a watch on a bracelet or strap not originally made for that watch. The SS bracelet is perfect for you watch and I hope you and your son wear it in the best of health! Congratulations.

I didn't get anything when I graduated! But then again, I didn't ask for anything. :/

Should I look for a new father ? 😁

These are different times and dads are more likely to these days to express themselves this way.

Your dad is supercool! Love your son sporting the speedy over his rocket suit. He looks 'razor sharp'. Would be cool if you would post the yearly pics of your son.

As my own interest and appreciation for mechanical beauties started in my late thirties, I hope my son will be interested and will truly appreciate one of my mechanical wonders as a gift when he gets older. For now, he gets to wear them only in the weekend over his sleeve for my forum posts. dd9c706ead238c2464dee81712acd3ff.jpg

In the mean time, enjoy wearing your sons speedy ;-)

I didn't listen to advice here - we had my son's capping ceremony tonight for his graduation this weekend, and the two of us wore our NEW Omega X-33 watches together for the event. The Aston will likely go to my brother this Xmas.

Tah Dah!

A couple of weeks late, no one told me it'd be so hard to take a picture of a six month old! This kid is so much fun and the watch has been great. As much as I liked the NATO straps six months ago, I almost exclusively wear it on the bracelet now.

Cool story! But what will you do when you have hand it over to him? Get yourself one as well!
Should somehow save this thread and show it to him in 16.5yrs time.

Congats to you and your wife. The day I found out I was having a son I went and purchased the Sub Lv . My avatar photo is of him with the time of his birth on the watch. He just turned Five so I have only thirteen years left, before I turn it over. Cheers Patrick

This is such a precious idea! It made for an adorable picture!

3rd bday for this little man. He helps me pick out which watch to wear most mornings.

“The black one!” is luckily his favorite.
