Thanks for the responses everyone.

Great story! And your son is already wearing it like the astronauts did!

You may want to consider getting another though. How will you ever part with this in 15-20 years time? 😉

I've been reading thread after thread since finding this forum. You all have a wealth of knowledge of Omegas and your passion is awesome. Wait, no, passion isn't the right word, obsession is the right word, and I'm afraid I've caught it. Here I have my dream watch to look at everyday, wouldn't trade it for any other but yet I find myself looking at the Aqua Terra and Seamaster Pro as a second watch. If I'm not careful, the track day budget could take a hit this year.

Be careful when he starts walking. My son grabbed my datejust off of my night table and it was GONE for 6 months. Finally reappeared, inside a toy, at the bottom of his toy chest.

That was in the 1990. Things haven't changed much. He still takes watches from me. 😀

Haha, that's rough. What you don't see in the first picture is my hand hoovering just out of frame in case he starts swinging.

No need to cut the track budget. A watch like a Speedmaster is 100% required for someone into motorsports. In fact, you likely should look to add some 'Racing' models or a few of the Schumacher editions next...

Besides, there is no such thing as a track budget. A monetary cap for track days exists only in a fantasy world, unless you are adding in $ each year towards the inevitable motor/ trans rebuilds, the bent metal, etc. So best to just forget words like 'budget' and buy what makes you happy. 👍

Nice - we had a discussion about doing this kinda thing when they're born, rather than waiting many years and then trying to go back and get them a birth year watch when they're harder to find and more costly. It came up when I gave my son a 1998 Omega SMP Bond quartz from his birth year, which I bought last summer and wore for a few months before I handed it down to him two weeks ago on his 18th birthday. I liked it enough that I bought a second 1998 SMP Bond a couple of weeks before his birthday, so I could wear mine with him.

Make sure you put away box papers and receipt now as they are a bonus for any vintage watch.

Wear the bracelet now as you want it to age with the watch.

Great thread by you, and all that have replied with nice compliments

Btw: you can refresh the steel bracelet for little money. I paid 75€/$ last year. So just wear the watch as you like! May be your son will aprreciate your signs of wear!

That's a great reference joerg. I wouldn't have expected the price to be so reasonable. Thanks for the info!

Congats to you and your wife. The day I found out I was having a son I went and purchased the Sub Lv . My avatar photo is of him with the time of his birth on the watch. He just turned Five so I have only thirteen years left, before I turn it over. Cheers Patrick

Great story Eric and lovely idea to buy the watch and for you to wear it safely before passing it to your son. Already the watch has connections woven into 3 generations. In 1970s and then in 2009 my grandad and dad gifted me their watches, a Waltham USA pocket and 1978 Speedy and they have created an inspiring connection to remember them by and for me to pass to my sons one day. So I'm sure your son will hold this gift dear in the future when he understands it's connection with you and your dad. Meantime, you enjoy wearing it. Looks the part!

WOW [emoji7] [emoji15] What an Amazing Story of 3 Generations etched on an Omega Speedmaster to become A Beautiful Legendary Family Heirloom. How about Laser engraving the names of Dad, You & your Newborn Son on the timepiece?
I know this will sound rather silly but any chance of purchasing quietly a second backup exact Omega timepiece but minus the tradisional air of festivity around it ? The Real One with " Dad's fingerprints all over it " would be kept in a Vault for safekeeping. Sure , You could wear it occasionally but the backup Copy could give you some piece of mind ,minimizing risks of being stolen , misplaced or wear & tear....All in All I wish You & Your Wife & Son the Very Best in Health & Wealth & Hope your Son grows up appreciating the sacrifices of his father & his father before him &
maintain all the Family traditions. One little advice from me.Tell Your Grown Up Son one day when he has to decide whether to listen to his future wife or his parents....Always... Always choose his parents first over 'the wife' no matter what the consequences are..... !!!

Great story, thanks! Perhaps you should removed the picture of the cards with the serial but I'm genuinely really happy for you.

Congrats on both! We had our second son the end of December and I picked up a blue Tudor Pelagos to celebrate. My Speedy is from 2011 the year my older son was born.

For all you newer dads, this time will come for you (sooner than you think), when you attend your son's or daughter's college graduation, and you give them a Speedy as a graduation gift.

I love your taste in watches. Two of my favorite.
