I just entered my 30's, and never had a watch. I really got the urge, and having a graduate degree and great career, decided to spoil myself a bit.

What are your thoughts? It feels so luxurious! I notice it takes about 90+ turns every few days, but it seems my fingers probably only do half at a time. Anything I should know to fully enjoy it? Even with quarantine, sometimes I still wear it with pajamas! I'm sure it should probably be boxed away until formal events, but hey.

I still haven't figured out the dials, and haven't really played with it or the manual to figure it out.

What's your favorite Omega Watch? Cost aside, mine is the model below. But that was thousands more than my purchase at nearly $10,000.

Welcome, excellent choice for a first watch. I wouldn't box it for formal events it's meant to be worn daily.

Try to wind it on a daily basis for good time keeping.

Where are you located, just curious what currency the $10k is.

The one thing to be aware of with a Speedmaster is it has two different Seconds hands.

The small dial near the 9 o'clock position is the regular Seconds hand that will go around whenever the watch is running.
The larger Seconds hand is for using the stopwatch feature.
It will normally rest at the 12 o'clock position until it is time to use the stopwatch.

The top pusher knob (on the right side of the case) turns the stopwatch on and a second push of it turns it off.
The bottom pusher knob (on the right side of the case) resets the stopped stopwatch hand back to the 12 o'clock resting position.

If you leave the stopwatch feature running all the time, then you'll need to wind the watch a lot more every day.

Congrats on that purchase! I would suggest that now is actually the perfect time to wear it all day long, you're at home far more often where the chance of damage is minimal. Heck, I'd be sleeping with it on!
However you choose to enjoy it, it's clear you will do just that, enjoy it.

Is that right? I thought the chrono consumes no more power, but requires more torque. So you shouldn't need to wind it more. But if left it will stop sooner, at around 40 hours as opposed to nearer 50. That isn't because it's exhausted the power reserve, but because the torque requirement exceeds the torque available sooner. But if you're winding it every day, it should just need the same winding each day as it would if the chrono wasn't running. Or am I misunderstanding?

@Matrix80 it is a lovely watch, and you should wear it all the time, and, as others have said, build winding it into your daily routine.

That’s how I was understanding it too. That’s the purpose of the clutch- to engage and disengage from the gear train, requiring no additional power to operate the chrono seconds.

 

Interesting. I assumed it used more winding power but it does make sense that it would be more torque.

Ahem, if speed (tick, tick, tick) stays the same and torque goes up then power needed goes up too. @Stripey had it right that the watch will come to a stop a little sooner as the mainspring runs out of power. I've tested the difference between chrono not running / running on freshly serviced watches -- Heuer with Valjoux 7730 movement: not running 43:00, running 41:50. Zodiac (Heuer) with Valjoux 7733 46:20 / 44:00, Speedy Reduced 49:04 / 48:50 (those extra jewels in the DD module?). Unknown service state: Heuer with Valjoux 92: 39:90 / 36:30.

Make of it what you will.

Oh yes, numbers and testing were the essentials of my entire working life. I see no need to stop now I'm retired, better than spending all day looking at £$%^&*(

Hey Matrix80, congratz on the new purchase! I used this forum to help me decide which Omega to get as my first nice timepiece. I love the Speedmaster, not only because of its clean and elegant look, but also its history. Welcome aboard, and congrats for seeing the light of a mechanical watch, and a Speedy to boot

 

I have a speedy and love it. Don't put it in the box and baby it. Wear it and wear it proud. It will pick up a few marks but after the first few you will care less and enjoy it. Looks like you have the hesalite crystal (plastic) so grab a tube of polywatch and you can polish out minor scratches in the crystal.
