I say sapphire for a modern 3861 and hesalite for a vintage tritium dial.

Mannn, I have been thinking about doing this! So you find the two watches are different enough to own both?

It seems you鈥檝e given each a different style with the straps, and your tritium has aged so nicely that each watch has a distinct vibe 馃憤 The 3861 dial appears to be a much deeper black, too.

I have a 145.022 and really want to give the black sapphire 3861 a spin, but am having trouble justifying owning both, given how similar they are - I feel like the second Speedy needs to be the white dial or something. But maybe not!

It all depends on you, whether you can justify owning two watches that appear identical to 99.9% of the population. Be prepared for surprised questions from whomever you show the watch, they won't see a difference. For us, this forum is really deep in the rabbit hole, we see and appreciate the subtle twists. Buy both if they make you happy.

@4011021 love that tritium!

Mine is a 3572.50 with display caseback and 1861 movement.

It's winter in Brazil so I'm enjoying leather straps, but both will be in bracelets in the summer. I strongly dislike the 90's Speedmaster bracelet so I use my 3572 Speedmaster with Uncle Seiko 1450 or 1171 bracelets. The 3861 original bracelet on the other hand is great.

They are very different to me. I think the 3861 appears blacker in the picture because of light and because the old hesalite gives an "ambar" warmth to the dial, whitle the new sapphire is more transparent, and perhaps the 1861 dial has aged somewhat. The sapphire plays greatly with the stepped dial. The 3861 sapphire looks a bit more "sophisticated" than the 1861 (not the best word but you'll get the idea) because of applied logo and stepped dial, but I think the sapphire glass helps with that more "sophisticated" look.

I'm considering to buy my first speedmaster professional but can't decide which one. Current hesalite model is cheaper, more historically accurate and has more vintage look. But, I'm a bit concerned about how it will wear overtime vs. more durable sapphire crystal. Also, caseback sapphire display is a nice touch since its movement is beautiful so. Also, which model hold up their value better in resell market?

For speedy owners, what is your take on this? Which one would you recommend? Thanks a lot.
Having seen both watches in person, I'd go with the Sapphire Sandwich. The fact that it has a more durable crystal is a huge plus (especially if you're going to use it as a daily), and I found the applied logo stunning. Also, if you're a fan of seeing the movement (like I am), then picking the 3861 is a no-brainer.
