MY FIRST ROLEX IN 1967

I would like to share my story with my first Rolex my Dad gave me in 1967. i was in Jr. high school. my dad
took a job in Saudi Arabia for 18 month contract. joking with my dad i said bring me back a divers watch. Why i
used the term divers watch is beyond me.
i was just a kid learning to snorkel. 18 months later my dad arrived home. we were living in Orlando at the time.
i asked my dad, did you find me a divers watch? no, there were none available. my heart sank. then my dad reaches
into his coat pocket and pulled out a Rolex GMT. That was the first time i heard the word "Rolex"
Ever since then i have been wearing a Rolex. My Rolex's have never let me down. very good customer service
after the sale. Just a real class act. For some people a Rolex just does not talk to them.
Riding my mountain bike across the Australian out back with my old GMT Bouncing around on my wrist KM after KM, day after day, week after week. There is no question about it, i have more miles on my bike then my car. My Rolex's have let me down.
When Rolex heard about my bicycle ride from Sydney to Perth W.A. Rolex contacted me and asked if i would consider sending me my old scratched GMT to Rolex head quarters in Switzerland. so they can look at it. Six weeks later my
watch arrived back with me. i took one look and said this is not my watch. So i contacted Rolex NY. Rolex confirmed
yes that is my watch. completely over hauled. Brand spanking new looking. the invoice read ZERO. That is a class act. This is why i have always been a Rolex fan.
If i was offered a brand new Day Date of my choice if i can tell you what is the model numbers on my three GMTs
the black and blue, my GMT all black bezel and the 1967 model i wouldn't have a clue. Doesn't mean a thing to me.
I am disturbed when i read on line that some readers are so sarcastic, hurtful and cruel on the things they
say about luxury watches. I bought a watch that was being shown at the 2018 Basel show.
I kept it five months and traded it in for a 2015 Rolex GMT II all black bezel. i couldn't wait to get rid of that watch.
However, i would never go on line and bad mouth a watch that someone just spent thousands on.
Besides, the best watch on our wrist is one that runs.
Thanks for listening.

Great story, Wayne.

I'm sure this resonates with a lot of watch enthusiasts on this forum regardless of brand. Being a huge GMT fan, I hope when your watch was returned from Rolex not all parts were replaced. It would lose all the character which took 51 yrs. to develop and bring it to that beautiful patinated state.

If you could be kind to post a few pictures, I'm sure members like me would much appreciate it.

Here is my '72.

3 timeszones, hence a need for a GMT 👍

Fair whack of Australia where time doesn’t exist in hours or minutes 😉

my second bicycle trip was a lot longer pedaling across Australia. going from the top end through the
red centre to port augusta, adelaide, great ocean road then up the south coast to Sydney. a tad over
two months. and my old GMT just kept on ticking. the sun most likely faded the bezel a bit more.

Wayne, we need some photos to support the nice write up you shared with us.

Great service by Rolex in your experience. Did they sawp out the dial, hands and bezel or did they leave that as is? Would love to see that GMT photo if you still have it.

The OP started another thread asking how to post photos, but I guess he never figured it out.

its a great story - and no doubt there is much love for the watch - to fastidious collectors Im not sure we would want to see photos - but Im sure the watch is now set to go on many more adventures.

I wont even entertain a light polish at service time, but each to their own I guess.
