Why would I be afraid to wear an incredibly rare vintage watch with no water resistance, an easily scratched crystal, and worth more than my car and motorcycle combined? 馃槈
You have a wonderful heirloom, congratulations. Look on the bright side, if the watch is worth more than your car and bike this year, next year it'll probably be worth a lot more than them combined. Cars values go down at a scary rate whereas you've got a store of value in that watch.

Safety deposit box will work out cheaper annually than insurance. But it will be a bit more painful.

What a wonderful heirloom, and so glad that you contacted William, and sent your Dad's watch to Simon Freese.. He is one of the few people that understands exactly how to clean and service our treasured watches.

Wear it regularly, and enjoy every moment, it has survived since 59, just don't go Diving in it..

Totally agree, enjoy the watch as your father did during the time it was his.

I'm not sure if it would be considered fair or good condition being a total newbie. The bezel is fairly worn and when I asked William if it would be worth finding a era-proper replacement he said he hadn't seen one in 10 years and it sold for $10k USD so that's out.

Great story and a magnificent watch!
I actually taken a similar path when I restored my dad's PloProf, my first thought was also to send it to Omega for a service and repair but doing the same research you did I ended up servicing it with someone that specialized in vintage watches.

Glad you did your research before hand as well.

Thank you, great story! Like the others, I am glad you figured out early that too often "restoration" = destruction of vintage value. The watch looks great as it is now!

If you have the watch pressure tested each year and the gasket replaced as needed, it will be water resistant enough to cope with a thunderstorm or an accidental splash while washing your hands. The crystal scratches easily, but polishes out easily. You can do it yourself with Polywatch. Those folks making tool watches in the 1950s were no fools.

A great story with a very happy ending. Combines two of my favourite plots: a family heirloom passed on and a beautiful vintage piece rescued from oblivion and gently restored to brilliance. Wear it with pride and enjoyment!
