Muddying Other People's Sales Threads

These forums have a common practice of people posting a pictures of their own watch with "Mine says hi" when the same model is mentioned. I am completely fine with that practice, except when it occurs in a sales thread. I think all the watch pictures in a sales thread should be of the actual watch that is for sale. I find it really annoying when people muddy the waters with other watch pictures. Am I the only one that finds this annoying? Should it be a sales forum rule?

Makes sense. I also find that bumping your sales post with “OHPF” or “Sold” is unnecessary. You can simply update your title without bumping. Not that I have anything to sell, but it moves others who do down the page.

I hope this did not muddy your thread.

I am pretty sure I am guilty of this, but I do agree with you. No worries about muddying this thread. I think the free form conversations are an important part of the forum. We have conversations, not a rigorous exchange of facts. The only exception being Sales threads, which should be the latter IMHO.

It's not just other people's watch pictures, it's the intrusion of people talking about the particular model for sale. There really should be no comments to a sales thread unless something major is missing in the thread, like price or where the watch is located. Other than that if someone has a question about the watch for sale just message the seller for clarification.

Not sure I’d agree with this 100%. If an offer is objectively great - good seller, good watch, good price - it’s, in my opinion, perfectly fine to express that. Might help with the sale and show less experienced users that a certain offer is indeed a great deal.

By the way, I like how this discussion is about what’s good practice among users as opposed to a request for the mods to check for and possibly delete those kind of posts. There will always be a myriad of opinions about how a market place in such a forum should look like, but I gotta say, the one we got here is pretty freaking great. So thanks for that. 😀

I am guilty of this too, but I do think that updating to OHPF or SOLD and then bumping is ok under the current rules and should continue to be allowed. It puts others on notice that a watch in no longer available and saves sellers time from having to respond to prospective buyers when a transaction is already underway.

Point taken, and of course you are correct, I get carried away sometimes!
Adjusted my latest one..

I am guilty of asking this in a sales thread, because I was really interested in the watch. In order to know whether import duties arise or not. And thinking that this might be of interest for others as well.

The seller simply ignored my inquiry. The watch is still for sale, despite several reductions. In the meanwhile I had found exactly the same watch locally and with the original stainless steel wristlet. For less than the instant asking price here (not to speak of eventual import duties). I should perhaps be grateful for that sellers ignorance ... 😁

I agree that commenting ‘sold’ should be allowed as it time stamps the sold date. Otherwise when looking back at old sales threads where only the title has been updated its impossible to know if it sold within hours, days or weeks

Agree with @wagudc 100%. It really annoys me when another watch gets posted in my FS threads or someone just wants to chat in a FS thread.

Never really thought about what @Davidt said above, I avoid the extra post and just change the thread title but will change that going forward. Point taken, makes total sense.

Edit to add: I also may peruse the section differently. I look for 1 or zero reply threads assuming they are fresh. Because of the approval process the newest are not always at the top so I look at post count.

Don't forget, if you ask a question in the thread, the seller cannot respond until 24 hours has elapsed since their last post. If you ask by PM, they can respond immediately.

If it's in the title that should be sufficient. While it's allowed, I think it's inconsiderate to those trying to sell but get moved down the page because of it. If I have to follow the 24 hour rule, why shouldn't someone who sold in less than 24 hours? That's the whole reason for Sold or OHPF in the title. Why should any seller be penalized by getting moved down the page just because someone wants to take a victory lap?

I tend to agree with you @MtV, but I also see @Evitzee's point of view. I guess I am conflicted and could be convinced either way.

You can generally tell by the number or dates of bumps whether a watch sat there forever or went quickly.

My last sale… I updated without bumping. See photo. The date of edit appears in the “Edit”.

I agree with the OP. I generally look at sales threads but not comment or reply for that reason.

Although I agree the best practice would be to update the title to Sold, or OHPF, I don't see the big penalty for other sales posts moving down, it's not like the other sales posts move 5-6 pages down.

My intention was not to call anybody out. It is a fairly common practice and there is not universal agreement that it is a bad thing. I was just expressing my point of view.

I think not posting your own pictures in response is a best practice. Marking a sale thread as sold either by an edit to the title or a post doesn't bother me one lick, I think that in the long run, it is courteous, even if it does temporarily bump other for sale threads down.

Lastly, commenting on great watches or good deals should be totally allowable. That can at times assist newer members who are still learning the ropes what a good price is, or what a good condition is. I see no reason for that practice to stop.

I agree. I will on rare occasion, express enthusiasm for a watch or my dismay that it’s still on sale.
