This 1960s (?) watch due back from service today.

I posted about this last year shortly after I bought it from @seekingseaquest.
This is one of my better buys. A lovely watch, great to wear and so light it’s easy to forget you’re wearing it, accurate and pretty. I’m a fan.

It is very difficult to say what is the worlds most underrated high end brand. How do we define that objectively? We certainly can say many brands are no less complicated or accurate time keepers than other mechanical watches of the same time period ,but certain brands have less value retention. If you appreciate a GP, FP Journe, Parmigiani, Moser, Roger Smith, Carl Bucherer or other smaller so called "independent" watches then that is all part of the variety of life. Today consumable items are sold by internet influencers. Why Rolex is so popular is unexplainable to me. I have owned many and it's only the fact that people are willing to spend greater money on a watch that has more instagram, reddit, facebook, youtube posts than another brand that propel product placement and therefore "value" to the new wave of consumer.

I was under the impression GP was one of the brands that is basically out of the watch market now. That market is so competitive with so many independents rising. So much in watches is not about quality but brand acceptance and I think GP may have made some missteps that have really hurt the overall brand. As said, GP is a high quality product with lots of interesting models but it is heavily discounted and loses value from there.

That makes a lot of sense.

For me resale value is an important consideration if only because my taste in watches outstrips my abilty to afford them.
For me also, as I am a fluid collector and I cannot keep everything as my taste's change.

If you are looking to buy new watches and have them retain, let alone appreciate in value, good luck! 😁

Interesting the calculus that goes into determining resale value of luxury watches. Brand is not necessarily everything, althought I'm sure that the folks at Rolex would disagree with that statement. I have a very nice JLC moon phase and two Omega Speedmaster Professionals among my collection. From a technological/build quality perspective, the JLC is better than my Speedmasters in every way (IMO), but it has merely held its value while the Speedmasters are both worth more than what they were purchased for. Go figure. I've never owned a GP, but I do like some of their modern watches.

I own 3 GP's, coincidentally all chronos.

An Olimpico 8846

That Olimpico is absolutely fantastic! Thanks for sharing.

I think both GP and JLC are extremelly underatted. Both brands are great. Can't go wrong

Wondering if there are any Girard Perregaux owners out there.

Investigating more into the brand, it is essentially of the same pedigree as Vacheron or AP (maybe even more so because GP made movements in house that were used by many other brands over the years, similar to JLC in this respect),

These days they make some ridiculous high end grand complications, that win many prizes and push the boundaries of watchmaking...

Yet they are significantly undervalued. Maybe arguably the movement finishing is a little bit below Vacheron/Lange/Patek nowadays, but the overall product is very very compelling.

Some examples below of the 1966 line which I love the aesthetics of. The enamel dial small seconds in the white gold is stunning!

Any GP owners, or people considering buying a GP , with thoughts on this?

I am fine if they stay under appreciated for awhile, it makes for some great deals 👍

But yes, Kering does seem to be poorly managing both GP and UN

I do wonder though, as someone else has also pointed out, if hodinkee posted an article tomorrow about GP, would our opinions here change?

Hodinkee Editor-in-Chief, Jack Forster, is a fan. Look up some of the articles he has written on GP watches, you'll find he is quite perplexed about their underrated position in the market…and his articles haven’t changed opinions.
