Not much into women's watches, but I always feel it's unfair that even very special ones retail so low.
A couple of years ago I bid on one, but was not the highest bidder. A Olga Tritt Lemania in 18k. 😲

Now to the thing: Who was Olga? Some digging was required......

Designer Olga Tritt was a Russian beauty who trained as a goldsmith in Brazil.
She opened her first shop in New York in 1910.
In 1939, the Brazilian government commissioned her to design a collection of jewelry to showcase Brazilian-sourced colored gemstones for the New York World's Fair.

This is an extract from an article about her dating back to 1912 from US magazine. Typos I guess comes from the OCR process.

A Girl Watchmaker

Miss Olga Tritt, a pretty little Russian girl, now only twentyfive years old, was apprenticed fourteen years ago to the trade of watch-maker. She found it necessary at eleven to earn her own living; but to her dismay, when she started out to search for work, she learned that there were few avenues of employment open to her.
Deep down in her heart she was a craftsman ; she had always had a real love for precious metals, and at last, after using all her powers of persuasion, she succeeded in interesting an old watch-maker in her efforts to earn her living in the field she had chosen, and ho apprenticed her for seven years.
She was first taught to be a watch-maker, and from that advanced to the designing of jewelry; for the two arts go hand in hand. At the end of her apprenticeship, she stayed on with the old watch-maker, and by the time she decided to emigrate to this country she was acknowledged to be an expert in fine metal work of all kinds.
But, though she can execute the most intricate bits of jewelry, she does not disdain the smallest job. One of her specialties is the mending of shell fans, and she supplies to distracted owners copies of antique jewelry that has been lost or stolen. Incidentally, she might show you, as she did me, a rare and beautiful watch of old Venetian enamel, the works of which are more than 200 years old, which she has just repaired.
The time-piece is not much larger than a dime; the work had to be done under a powerful magnifying Aand required supreme patience, ow, every one takes an interest in the little Russian, and from the Pt she landed at Castle there were many to hold helping hand to her. Down wholesale district, where alers in expensive gems heir quarters, she is alelcome, and they will give might refuse it to a man.
Not only are they glad to see her succeed, but they appreciate her value as a craftswoman of the highest type.

Misa Olga Tritt

Fantastic story, and beautiful watch. As for the "unfairness" of the lower prices of vintage women's watches, well of course it's because nobody buys them!!! and that means also that if a woman purchases one of those "cheap" women's watches, that will never appreciate as men's watches have. Military Blancpain Fifty Fathoms (ie Tornek Rayville 900s and BP milspecs) could be purchased for as little as 350 USD about 20-15 years ago -- and now they're at 100K!!! That never happens with a woman's watch. The New York times in 2004 wrote an article saying women's watches were undervalued and should appreciate and guess what: they haven't!!

So if today I were to spend on a vintage woman's watch, I'll never be sure whether I'd be able to recoup the expense if I need to resell. So where's the unfairness??

Modest by comparison, but a favourite of Ms. Canuck. 1927, 14-karat white gold Gruen, sterling silver dial, vitreous enamel Arabic numerals, after-market bracelet. Total diamond weight about 0.10 carats.

But then, why wear what your friend wears? You've got your own style with the 1940s tool watches, and it's not hard to guess which style gets my vote - and probably the vote of most of the dudes here 👍

@abrod520 You may have a point... and her watch simply would not be replicable as I don't have her ressources. Fun nonetheless to think of something entirely different.

This one is very fine and its dial is in very good condition.... many of them are just really bad.

I think it is not only lottery opportunity that women are looking for (they already had Birkin for that). It is also about buying channel. I have seen a small kiosk inside luxury department store in Japan who just sell vintage women watches from top brands with service guarantee. We are talking about Rolexes, Cartiers, Omega, Chopard from 50s to 70s. Those which could bought at ebay for usd 100 they sell it for usd 500 and above. Clever business model.

The "unfairness" is of course only there when you browse for nice watches and find that the one you wanted is over your budget. As such a woman has more, and cheaper, choice. But you are also entirely correct that when the time comes to sell the thing, the unfairness has shifted 180 degrees......
Wish I got hooked on vintage watches a bit earlier than I did..... I have made a couple of really good purchases, but they are getting tough to find, and I see that the ones I would like just don't come around cheaply anymore.

Agreed on that.... But you did manage to build up a pretty impressive collection!

This is a very timely thread for me. Mrs Scepticalist is pretty hard to please on the watch front, liking restrained bling, not liking anything large or in yellow/rose gold. I'm desperately looking for a suitable 40th timepiece to augment her Skagen daily wearer

Right now I'm thinking that the vintage Baume and Mercier seem to have similar clean lines

Not bling at all but understated and discreet - and classy. Cheap too and rather easy to find.
A hit with Mrs Stygg. A Zenith Movado Museum watch. White gold plated. Mens model but not large - guess 30-33 mm.
Sorry for the bad pictures:

Forgot... My wifes best friend inherited a vintage Georg Jensen/Vivianna Torun Bülov-Hübe. I believe they are still made. They are also of the understated kind but there are some that are blinged up.

Designer:

@styggpyggeno1 Both the movado and the black dial look pretty damn cool.
@Scepticalist, would those be suitable for Mrs. Scepticalist?

I do like the Georg Jensen, which could satisfy both SWMBO and myself - the diamond set bezel is her style and as it's more jewelery than watch I'm not so upset about spending significant sums on a £20 quartz movement 😀

Only possible stumbling point is if 27mm looks too large on the wrist for her. I have some time though, so I can hopefully get her to try similar sizes before the birthday comes around.

...spending significant sums on a £20 quartz movement ...

Look at the vintage ones - they are not quartz (however - if the bearer is not a watch nerd - the care free convenience of quartz might actually be a selling point).

Very true. My better half have several "expensive-ish" quartz watches from Bvlgari, Cartier and so on. Nothing that I was involved in procuring, but she is very pleased that all she have to do is ask me to kindly replace a battery once in a while.
Having to set the time every time she wants to change watch makes no sense to her.... So I guess most of my collection is safe so far...😁

@Syrte, you've seen this one before.
I bought this for my wife as a "push" present last year... I thought it was quite striking with the diamonds and faceted crystal. It is virtually NOS, 14K white gold, adorned with several diamonds, bracelet and clasp are also 14K wg. I paid a bit more than I probably should have, it turned out she didn't really like it and the bracelet was way too small on her. Plus, she felt she didn't go to nearly enough formal events to require a cocktail watch. It's been sitting in a box for 14 mos, much like it must have with the previous owner. Needless to say, PM me if anyone is interested!

That model was a premium model in the Omega Sapphette series, likely from the early to mid 1960s. It was a premium item then, and it is a premium item now! Very much like my wife's favourite Omega which varies only in that, on her's, there are no diamonds, and the synthetic sapphire crystal is tinted a beautiful pale pastel blue. Your lady doesn't know lucky she is to have such a considerate husband! I'll bet she could get to like it if the bracelet was adjusted to fit her, so she could wear t.
