Moonwatch power dies when chrono is running

Hi all,
Sorry if this has been covered before, my moon watch power dies within an hour or two if the chrono is running.
Is this common? It was serviced about a year before the problem arose. I'm pretty cheesed off. I live in London and if its a simple fix I really would rather get a watchmaker to fix it, I own two Omegas and they are both dead.

(The other one is a seamaster automatic. I just mention it to illustrate how little I am beginning to think of Omega as a manufacturer)

Sorry for the fragmented nature of these posts - one more thing - this is the hessalite version, the proper moonwatch.

No, it is not common if you have properly wound the watch so the watch needs a review. It's unlikely that any watchmaker will just open it and do partial work (without a full service) unless you have some relationship with them.

If it is new or was serviced by Omega, surely you are still in the warranty period? Just send it back.

If serviced by someone else, are you still in that warranty time or was it just 12 months? Try reaching out to the watchmaker.

I don't know why you're suffering these issues but, if you bought both of these watches new within the last couple of years, I would get in touch with the dealer where you bought them to see if they can do anything. If you didn't buy them new and they've been opened/worked on by someone else then it is not likely to be down to the Omega manufacturing standards. Likely poor work on someone else's part or it's received a knock, I'm afraid.

Can't be more help, sorry.

Regards, Chris

I think more info required.

Is the symptom you fully wind your watch and then start the chrono and then watch stops after an hour two?

Yep, if I don't run the chrono the reserve lasts a couple of days. If I run the chrono it's dead by by dawn...

Thanks Chris, that's very helpful. It was serviced around two to three years ago, and has been having the problem for nearly a year now. It was a proper service by Omega; second service in ten years. The Omega store in Stratford is nearby, I might give them a call now...

Thanks chaps,
Just got off the phone with them, they're sending me out an envelope to return it so they can have a look at it. The last full service was Nov 2016 and its had the problem for 6 months to a year now so pretty disgusted.
Hopefully they can get her working without charging me the 550 quid, we will see...

I hope I dont come off rude, but is it possible that something in your daily activities may cause damage to the watches? Its pretty unusual that two Omegas fail in such a short time for the same person.

Not at all rude!
I'm a desk jockey, the only exertion is occasional weight training, and I always take my speedy off for that. I do shower with the speedy on.
As for the seamaster, thats a watch I got twelve years ago, has never been serviced. I basically got the moonwatch a couple years after it and just threw it in a drawer, so no real surprise it no longer works, although not brilliant either...

(The seamaster is a coaxial automatic, it doesnt hold any power for more than a few seconds / minutes after a wind)

Did the service not come with a year or two warranty ?
How old is the watch and you know the service history ?
Would say something is not right here.

You do realize that you have to wind up fully, don’t you? That sounds very basic, but nowhere in the thread have you described winding it fully...

Well obviously I have wound it fully, not quite sure what kind of person would take a two gran watch out of a drawer, give it a couple of shakes, then assume its broken. You may take comfort from imagining a world where people like that draw breath, it makes me shudder. to each their own...

Chrono does not affect power reserve. It requires more torque to run so as the watch winds down it might stop a little sooner as the mainspring cannot provide as much torque at low winding state.

I hope it works out. It's well outside of the warranty that I expect you got but, you can try. Shame you didn't get back to them when it first started having issues as that may have been in the warranty period. We live and learn.👍

Cheers, Chris
