Watches of Espionage has been very entertaining. I especially liked the episode "Sketchy Guys Wear Breitling." It had me wanting to pick up a Breitling Aerospace.

Omega should know by now that they better keep all commemorative text & emblems on the caseback... discrete & stylish !

Thank you for sharing this, @SpeedyPhill! My family visited the White House last year. As my stuff was going though security, one of the officers, called out, “Sir, is this your Speedmaster?” I think my reply was simply, “Yes.” And I’m wondering what comes next…then he says, “Cool watch! We have these (and now he’s taking his watch off) Seamaster’s with our Secret Service logo on the back.” It seems like he is genially interested in having something to talk to about this, and he is now holding two watches…his and mine. He has to move a bit to hand mind back and show me his. As a watch guy, I figured that I will always remember this. Also never had a chance or reason to share the story.

I like both of these, but exclusivity and meaning aside, I would rather a civilian SMP over that unit watch. The beige doesn't quite do it for me. I do like the grey dial and all brushed case though! The pilot Speedy though definitely looks cooler than the civilian variant. It's not a big difference, but it just looks better.

My favourite unit watch is still easily the RAAF IWC. I would have bought it in a heartbeat if it was available to civilian contractors back when I was in that space, but it's strictly for serving members so no dice for me. Oh well. 😜

From a former RAAF member: Many thanks for sharing this!
Great looking watch. Love the colour combo of the black case with the blue dial. However, I'm less keen about the use of ceramic for the case. I get that it's scratch resistant but if it's hit hard enough it will chip or even break. I've seen a Speedmaster DSOTM have a lug break clean off after it was accidentally dropped from about a metre high. So it does beg the question of whether this IWC is a serious tool watch designed for use in demanding circumstances, or whether it's more of a commemorative piece. IMHO the Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT or Speedmaster Pilot "Flight Qualified" are better examples of tool watches that can also be customized for various units.

Edit: corrected spelling error

Yeah, if I was gonna nitpick it, I'd rather it be titanium case, like the caseback and crown. I'd change nothing else though. I've tossed around the idea of getting a regular IWC Pilot many times, but I always think when would I wear it that I wouldn't be happier wearing my Railmaster, and the answer always seems to be never.

I should clarify, I think it's accessible for former serving members as well. It doesn't seem to be in that article so I don't remember where I read it, but I think you reach out to the guy who organised the whole thing via email, and it's apparently fairly subsidised too. I think I read mention it was cheaper than the Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT.

@JimInOz
Would love to hear your thoughts about the IWC RAAF watch mentioned in Jakey's post above.
I would rather have a stainless steel or titanium watch my self. Apart from the relative brittleness of the ceramic, I also like the look of the SS better. I would have prefered a black dial and an Omega logo, but I cant have it all. Are there different grades of ceramic, that are tougher and less hard?

Agree with you regarding the use of stainless steel or titanium for the case. For a more "military" look they could even use a bead blasted finish (like the Sinn 356 Flieger) but then you'd probably need to change the dial colour to matt black as that would match the case better. Looks like what I'm after is a reissue of the Mark XI 🤣

I king of like the Sinn 556 i, almost the perfect field watch, just nees an Omega logo. (and maybe a red tip on the seconds hand)

I sand blasted my Citizen BM8081-E3 with an industrial blaster. The medium was much too coarse, but I think it came out well and looks cool. I also tried to darken the case with acid, it did not stick on the stainless steel. I also changed the crystal for saphire. Its a cool feild watch, but my wife keeps stealing it. At the moment its doing its job as a field watch, as she is on the Hardanger Plateau winter training RAF solidiers

Sorry for hogging this tread, but I just now had time to watch the video. Great video, but I dont understand why Omega dont use this more in their marketing. This appeals much moore to me and probably many other (watch) guys than some celebrity wearing and endorsing an Omega. The image these guys in the video gives the watch and the Omega brand is way-way cooler than some celebrity on a red carpet.

And I think they forgot the greatest one of them all in the video; The SAS comunicator watch: https://stories.omegaforums.net/sea...-family-british-army-sas-sfc-limited-edition/

Do like the look of that Sinn also. However, I feel like it needs a marker at 12 o'clock like a luminous triangle or two dots (like the Speedmaster) so that you know which way is up.

There is a red seconds hand variant 556 i RS.

I really like that watch as well, but it's a bit too minimalist. As far as the Omega logo, the field watch style is why I went for the Railmaster, it's about as close as you can get from them. It's a bit dressier though, but no more than the Explorer. That said, for a really fancy field style watch, you have options...
