Mk40 Schumacher on eBay

I've always wanted a Mk40 Schumacher, and came across this on eBay - it comes with the 'Authenticity Guarantee' which gives me some comfort, but nothing else in terms of papers, receipts or box etc. - seller claims to have bought from a watch dealer in NY 2 years ago and has a solid eBay history.

I'm not so bothered it is on a Nato, as I don't really like bracelets, and always end up swapping them out for either a Nato or rubber strap - I also think this Nato goes well with the dial colours.

To me the case looks like it's had a polish or two, as it is for from 'crisp', but I'm not a knowledgeable Omega collector (albeit I have 3, including a 1935 T17 Carre dial bought here on the forum), hence I wondered if anyone could spot anything (good or bad), or give any advice, that might help me decide on whether to buy the watch or not.

Looks real enough for a Mk40 Speedmaster, but it has nothing to do with Schumacher. Those have a completely different dial and caseback. If you want one of the many different Schumacher Speedmasters, this isn’t one and you need to do your research more. But if you want a Mk40, it looks OK — but that would depend on the price. And assume it hasn’t ever been serviced — these tend to be flipped right when a service is due.

As said above, this has nothing to do with Schumacher and is just a Mk40, which is a cool watch on its own.

For posterity, the price is £2,800 or with eBay’s conversion $3,642.38. It’s a bit steep considering its head only on an aftermarket used nato.

Here are two recently sold listings on eBay, which were in their appropriate bracelets

My first thought was “overpriced,” although to be fair, prices on these can be all over the place.

These used to be stupid cheap…and then Dinky did a reissue LE of them and the prices skyrocketed on the older ones. I’ve always loved the polychrome dial but missed the boat as I won’t pay that much for one.

In fact there was an advertising shot showing Schumacher wearing one of these. Like many Omega ambassadors such as Peter Blake, he seemed to have many ‘choices’. As many as the marketing dept could get on his wrist so it’s not as creative a stretch as you might think to name check him, though it’s certainly not an obvious tie up and there is no other connection. Personally I prefer the name Harlequin Mk40 or Flightmaster homage Mk40.

As for price, bear in mind the missing bracelet is worth maybe £500 and the box and papers another ~£250 so yes it’s way overpriced. Even with the increase in values I’d want that at nearer £2k. They aren’t all that rare, another will be along soon.

As others have said, there was an advertising campaign which featured Schumacher with this watch. In addition, this watch came in a tire shaped box with Schumacher's signature on it.

I’m probably one of the few people for who the Schumacher connection would be a negative. I never liked that guy.

My mistake, I just always referred to it as a MK40 Schumacher for some reason (must have stuck in my mind from somewhere) - I've definitely now evidenced that I'm not a knowledgeable Omega collector, I just tend to buy what I like the look of, and it's this or a Tag Heuer Monaco Gulf that I've been fixating on!

As to services, I suspect you are completely right that its never been serviced - he has no papers and hasn't had it serviced in his ownership, so I'm guessing not much happened before him either.

One thought, because I don't know anyone who keep absolutely nothing about their watch (especially one that came via a dealer) - is there a way to tell if it's been reported stolen or not at any point?

That was my initial thought, that £2,800 was a bit steep.

I'm not massively bothered about the bracelet being aftermarket, as I think it goes well, and I also tend to swap any bracelets out for something I personally find more comfortable.

That said, no bracelet, no papers or box or receipt, I was thinking of offering something much closer to £2k for it - I know its an Omega etc., but it's not a watch for everyone, and I'd feel that would better reflect a private sale on eBay where the watch on sale is, as you say, just a head on £30 of aftermarket strap.

Thanks for this - close to £2k was my initial feel, but you have been much more scientific than me! The seller may take the offer poorly, but I'd assume a proper offer is better than no offer! If he's not happy I will take your advice and wait for the next one .............

I dont think the MK40 come with this box, the Schumacher Speedmaster Reduced racing collection did though, it came in red, yellow and blue. like below. each with special packaging and the split tire watch holder, I have owned the red and the yellow in the past, both had this tire shaped box. (not my photos, got em on the web.)

No it didn't. Those were reserved for the yellow, red and blue reduced Schumi versions. There was also a Cart version that had a blue dial with the Cart logo at 6 o clock - this was Mario Andretti. They came in a standard black or red box.

It was the first watch Schumi wore - in fact he was gifted his for his first win at Ferrari from memory. That watch has just sold at auction.

My uncle bought his brand new MK40 back in the late 90's and his watch came in the tire box. That said, it is possible that they gave him the wrong box.
