I found OF right as I was about to pull the trigger on a watch from a problem seller. Some of the other members here warned me right before I was about to buy it, so I didn't go through with it.
Always good to see someone avoid a dodgy seller or buy with protection, its never a good feeling when someone signs up and tells us I paid $xxxx by wire and never got the watch.

Before OF, I though all SpeedMasters look the same.
After a year of reading, I now know all SpeedMasters look the same.

OF saved me from paying the DNT*.

In 2017, to compliment my beloved 2254 bought new 9 years earlier, I was about to pull the trigger on a polished to butter, frankened birth-year Omega. I never even considered to seek out sites like OF.

Thankfully, my scrolling took me here rather than to ownership of a POS. My first vintage was instead a SM30 linen dial from 1963 (made in my birth year but dated the following); I was enabled by a comment from Troels, no less. Talk about a confident way to begin. The movement is pristine, but the hands are pitted. Not perfect but I love it all the same.

I reckon my biggest mistake was not giving full consideration to time: the books that would remain unfinished, the ones that would never get started, and the 000s of hours that would seem to disappear after I found OF.

With OF I've got about a dozen really cool watches.
Without OF I'd probably have about four questionable watches but not know know any better.
That's a win, right?

I would argue that I’ve made waaaay more ‘mistakes’ since joining than before...

This, this, this. Although my worst mistakes were thirty years ago...

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

(Sorry about my fingers. These are old photos, before OF taught me better manners.)

Had a laugh when I read this, because as I was scrolling through the pictures, I muttered to myself "Dude, get your fingers off the movements!"

😀👍

Not that I would call it a mistake, but I didn't own any Omegas when I joined here, and now I have a few...

I don't know if I made any mistakes that would have been rectified by OF had I known about it first... but you guys certainly are a bunch of enablers. So it's all kind of a wash...

#enablement #aint #cheap
100% 👍
A little knowledge with a little experience can be a dangerous combo. I am at the stage where I "think" I know things but still making mistakes, just becoming less expensive. (See thread on my recent bracelet purchase as further proof of my noob taxes still being paid) 🤦

I learned that speedmaster reduced is not just a "smaller" speedmaster moonwatch. And that you can join the forum without buying an Omega (not a mistake, just an assumption I made about membership). Thanks OF!

A pie pan Constellation that was a redial and had a badly over polished dog leg case. Surprisingly, I was able to sell it for what I had in it even with disclosing its issues after holding onto it for a few years.

I went to Austin Kaye With Mrs Beast to look for a nice vintage Omega as a tenth anniversary present. I still love the watch very much:

But it didn’t take me long after finding OF to realise it was a redial and that 1956 Seamasters rarely look quite like that. Luckily, I’d never part with it and I love that it is such a presentable, wear-without-fear piece. And Mrs Beast also loves it.

OF is responsible for all the original vintage purchases made since then...

That’s actually a very attractive redial- no shame in that one.

Not really a mistake, as I've built a great relationship with my local boutique, but paying full retail price for my first Omega. I could have saved lots of money and used it to purchase more watches.

I have always loved the irony of that handle in this place. It’s like being on a diet and meeting up with friends as the Cheescake Factory for dinner....sure, just a salad.

Along those same lines, I love that you never know what you are going to see...like the most inexpensive of affordables posted alongside heirloom pieces.
