https://metro.co.uk/2022/06/09/tour...d-off-wrist-outside-barcelona-hotel-16798193/ Whilst I am appalled at this crime I cannot get my head round why you would wear such a valuable watch in a city notorious for thefts.
Because they can afford to loose it. Insured, or if not it will hurt but not effect their life that much.
I doubt people buy million dollar watches to hide away in a bank vault, especially not one THAT ugly. They buy them to tell the world they can buy a million dollar watch. Did he realise how dangerous that part of the world is? Who knows? After all, he comes from gun-totin' USA so maybe he thought in comparison Europe is like going to his mum' house.
It’s unconfirmed that its the Hublot but lets say it is. So there is a 1 million dollar black caviar bang, and its this one: https://www.gphg.org/horlogerie/en/watches/one-million-black-caviar-bang Which is a 1 of 1 piece unique tourbillon sold in 2008, which seems like a bit of a long shot but maybe its that watch. Alternatively it could be one of the regular Black Caviar Bangs, which is this trash-can of a watch: https://moneyinc.com/hublot-million-dollar-black-caviar-bang/ Which is 10k or so, if one were drunk enough to buy it. The interesting thing with the regular Black Caviar Bang is that in the marketing they made a big deal of the fact that a single carat diamond can be $25,000 on its own, and that there are lots of black diamonds on the watches and as a result they’re worth like $850k… even though they’re not. Obviously that isn’t how diamonds work but if a policeman in Barcelona googled the watch they may have found that. A 1 million dollar piece unique Hublot that would probably only sell for a fraction of that if it hit the market now getting stolen though would make me wonder if its insured.
I know Barcelona pretty well, having traveled there frequently. One keeps ones valuables close in the narrow streets of the old city. Thats where you wear your beater watch.
Yep. I lived in El Born for almost a year. A lot of street robbery. Amsterdam is nothing compared to over there. But what a great city!
I adore Barcelona .., it was our favorite place for week long meetings. It’s one of my happy places. Took my wife there a few years back, she too was smitten.
So let me suggest a scenario.... Guy who buys regular 10k black caviar, gets it "stolen" in a believable manner, has press tout it as the million dollar model.....files insurance claim for 1 million dollars.
I doubt it, insurance investigators are often very smart and watches like that million dollar piece don’t come into anyones hands without a solid paper trail. When my house was robbed and my car stolen I was looked at very closely as the fact that the car id only had two months went missing along with my wallet and apple AirPods while the Rolex Daytona was left on the bench beside them was a bit of a red flag. When the car got found and the kid got caught they realised the kid was just a complete idiot and the detective was quite entertained letting the kid know he stole 2 year old AirPods covered in my earwax and left a watch with a 50k aud street price.
I got my ass out of there as soon as I could, now in a high security tower with cameras, swipe cards and on site security. Kid got released a few months back and some prison fellowship organisation asked me if I’d like to meet him and have a conversation / pray with him. That was a firm no thanks.
"Restorative justice" is the new big thing these days. Be nice to a crim and he'll see the error of his ways and .... blah, blah, blah. Anytime you see an adjective preceding the word 'justice' you know a scam is afloat.
