I like it. My only concern is the 16mm lug width. Not the end of the world but I am a larger man and I've never worn a watch proportioned like that. I still really like the look and story. It's on my list.
The 16mm gives it a slight lolipop effect like you get with the Speedmaster on a Komfit. It’s a period look which I find charming- and I have 7.5” wrists if that helps scale.

How big of a guy are you? I'm not small myself, 6' and 190lbs, and I only wear vintage watches many of which have 16mm or 5/8" straps. They present very nicely on the wrist, at least in my opinion.

6'4", about 255 pounds, 8" wrist. You're tall, I'm large.

Okay, so you're quite a bit bigger than me so this won't quite be an apples to apples comparison. My wrist is approximately 7 1/4." These two are my smallest wrist watches. The first one is a Hamilton Piping Rock, its lug to lug length is 1 3/4" and it's width is 1 1/8," the second one is a Hamilton Turner and its lug to lug length is 1 3/8" and its width is 7/8," both are on 5/8" straps. For reference 5/8" is 15.875mm.

Couldn’t agree more. This is a spectacular watch in every way. All the negative comments are from people (including watch media) who don’t understand this watch and are trying to compare it to modern watches- this is not a “modern”watch. This is very purposely built to a specific style based on historic design specs from Bulova’s archive. This is not a modern interpretation- this is a strait reissue and they absolutely nailed it.

Also, anyone who says this is a FF “homage” does not know their history. Rayville won the contract, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t other companies competing to meet the Mil-spec. Bulova made it further than anyone else at the time- and this is that watch.

I also own 2 of the Hack series and again, they knocked them out of the park. I own the original 3818A the hack series is based on and they absolutely nailed the proportions in terms of upsizing the original and not screwing up the details.

I love what Bulova is doing and these watches are upstaging some heavy hitters in my collection for getting daily wear.
It’s a lovely homage

16mm lugs are a non starter for me. I do like the dial/bezel. I'm a sucker for the 15-30-45 FF type bezels.

If you lived close to me, I would let you borrow it for a week- you would forget that 16mm thing real fast

Still like it. Wish I lived in a higher traffic area and I could look at these things in person before making the decision to buy them. It might make all the difference.

I guess many might consider a $500 watch a beater. But if you like this style and are really looking for a beater (and definitely with more stigma) then consider this. The Rdunae R6 is an interesting alternative in a tidier package at 40mm x 50mm, and much thinner at only 14mm. And that includes an audaciously tall 3mm double dome, top hat sapphire crystal. The case is entirely blasted like the Bulova, which you don't usually find with these types of homages. Has top chamfers on the lugs too, another rarity I appreciate. The body is thinner with more down turned lugs. Not drilled, but they're 19mm wide instead of 16. No complaints about the use of the NH35 either. They put quite a bit of thought just in the back design. Its construction secures the movement well and even has an inner arty signature others don't often bother with. Odd that it has a reversed thread - never seen that before. They claim a 200m water rating which is probably optimistic, though it does have a fat case back gasket and screw down crown (plus that beefy crystal). Some Chinese fellow did a pretty good job here, and all for $199? Or $149 with an identical looking mineral crystal.

It comes only as non-date but with either signed or unsigned dials with different colored faux moisture detecting symbols. I was thankful to find a date wheel hidden under the dial, albeit a white background one. I swapped that for black and topped it with a new dial. Picked one up second hand and had some fun with it. A few stock shots and then mine:
