Michael Schumacher Speedmaster's

I've recently gotten really into Formula 1.

Like many of us, when I get into a hobby - I get obsessed. When looking back at old races, one of the drivers I became interested in was Michael Schumacher. His upbringing was similar to mine - born to working class parents in a small ugly town (apologies, resident of H眉rth). The 2021 documentary 'Schumacher' on Netflix is excellent, and I recommend it for anyone who has even a small interest in Formula 1 or sporting greatness.

Anyway, I was always aware of the Schumacher Speedmaster - and its various incarnations - but never truly appreciated it. Watches played a large role Schumacher's life and he was a collector.

To get to the point - I was hoping this thread could be used as a sort of compendium of resources or information about the Schumacher Speedmaster's - and a place owners can share photos and stories. I'm still on the hunt for a good one, so look forward to adding a photo soon!

Saw a few on my recent trip to Japan, almost pulled the trigger on this. Fairly priced watches and looks unique enough. Pity I already busted my budget on another watch in this shop.

This one is one of my favourite models - although I think I prefer the all red dial. Screams Forza Ferrari 馃槄

Not the Schumacher per say, but the famous Cosmos MK40 Triple Date none the less. Probably my favorite over my Pro and they're really gaining value too.

That is a 10/10. Might have to keep an eye out for one of these.

There were Omega adverts with about many different watches featuring M Schumacher so there isnt really one single design that can be called 'The Schmacher' like there was with racing driver watches in previous eras. Some for sure have a close link via case or box branding but I'm pretty sure I have actually seen an advertisement back in the day for the black Mk40 as shown above with his image slapped on it too, so that one from one POV has just as much right to be on this thread. It is a similar story with Peter Blake and Jacques Mayol. There were many models attached to them by the marketing department so it is not easy to say 'ahh that is a Blake Seamaster'. I mean, which one? He wore about 10 according to them.

There are quite a few different models that were released. If I'm not mistaken, most of them/all of them are 'reduced' models. I too am an F1 fan and Schumi was my ultimate driver when I was younger. As such, I've toyed with the idea of getting one of these watches at some point. However, which one? That is the true question. Looking forward to reading other's thoughts, etc.

I find the Schumacher editions nice for interesting racing dials without the collectors premium.

I ultimately pulled the trigger on a Japan Racing speedy but would absolutely consider one of these if I wasn鈥檛 able to justify the Japan Racing cost.

If you like Schumacher鈥檚 working class background you might look into Lewis Hamilton鈥檚 story. I鈥檇 personally love to see Lewis win an 8th championship but I fear time鈥檚 running out for that.

Years ago I was tracking these for a buddy who acquired a few, so I'm happy to share what I know:

Although the brightly colored reduced models do not have MS markings directly on the watch, the special "tyre" boxes have his signature, so I do count these as MS models. Apparently the red and yellow were launched first, followed by the blue at a later time. Production is said to have run from 1996 - 1999.

Note that there's another blue model with with the CART racing logo on the dial and tyre box, but I do not count that as an MS model.

Then came his first LE to honor his 3rd championship in 2000. 6000 black dial and 4000 silver for 10,000 total.

A whopping 11,111 piece LE for the 4th championship in 2001 followed 5,555 for the 5th in 2002.

Then came a very special 18K red gold model to celebrate the combined 5 championships to date. 50 on 18K bracelet and 505 on strap for a 555 total.

The 6th championship in 2003, LE of 6000, is where they start using the term "The Legend". Similar yet different was a Ferrari Team Special Edition. Supposedly 500 made, gifted to the Ferrari team, and not sold commercially.

Then to really confuse things came a series of 3 non LE models collectively called "The Legend Collection".

Finally the quirky model to celebrate his 7 championships...with btw "The Legend Collection" on the back.::facepalm1::

A very thorough post. Note there are 4 separate families of Speedy represented there (5 if you split the coax and non coax Broad Arrows) but not a single one has Moonwatch DNA which will perhaps annoy those who would like a MS/Moon crossover! Indeed many of those models were slow sellers in their more humdrum versions. Models like the Broad Arrow and especially Reduced have had their fair share of brickbats over the years, perhaps unfairly.

I thought I read that these Speedmasters were more prone to issues and that the service costs can get very expensive. Or am I mistaken?

It's not a simple picture, and as I say these models are quite different from each other. Some are simple to service and reliable, some fall under the Reduced umbrella which adds complexity as they are modular, and others are from the Broad Arrow family which had initial teething troubles eventually ironed out. Some are closely related to the ubiquitous 7750 and so are less problematic than others.

Note all are automatic winding, something that sets them apart from the Moonwatch family straight away.

Awhile ago I read the same thing at least with the reduced series. I wanted to get the yellow dial one but saw enough posts to not deal with it

What a collection! The first watch, the red Speedmaster, is it too loud? I love the way it looks but kind of feel like it's a bit too much for everyday wear. I'd love to have one though.
