I have this watch in mind for an 18th birthday gift to a very artistic young person - if it does not ignite a passion for watches nothing will :0)

Well ... that didn't take long or hurt much.

Didn't even see it before it was gone in a flash.

I have noticed this style of Luch on Ebay and considered them, just because of the styling. Would have been better to obtain Alpha's, but like Scarecrow Boat, I'm in the US so was sucking wind on acquiring this one.

Yea for Alpha and Omegafanman!

Starting to do some digging on these … another journey begins (bugger)

In 1961 the Soviet Ministry of Industry demanded a very flat watch with a thickness of the movement less than 3mm. The 1st Moscow Watch Factory came up with the 2209 movement, which was 22mm wide, 2.9mm high and utilises 23 jewels and was celebrated accordingly. In 1962 the ‘ultra-thin’ 2209 movement was sold to the Minsk Watch Factory, which used it for the Luch watches. The 2209 Luch watches were stamped with three different logos during its production.

This website is great - wonderful the free resources collectors create for us.

2209 Watch Movement

I might need to start correspondence with a Russian speaker - the lady below from the seventies Luch catalogue seems to have the perfect qualifications and knows the brand :0)

I don't know what that top language is but it isn't Russian. Probably Ukrainian or Bulgarian. The next two are Polish and Czech.

"Luch" is Russian for beam or ray, btw.

My wife is Ukrainian and mother tongue Russian. She assures me the wording on the watch is Russian. Sometimes words are the same in other languages. The text in the brochure is not Russian or Ukrainian. Possibly Bulgarian at the top.
