I don't know about the uses in Canada / USA, but in France, the insurance valuation is always less than the market value, unless the object whatever it is (watch / jewel / car / motorbike / piece of art...) has been valuated by a "respectable" expert. A valuation report should then be available, and usually handed over and approved by the insurance co. : otherwise : NUTS ! the insurance co. has the power. As to this watch, I am not familiar with these unishell dials : worth a premium ?? but then it is "only" a 14K case, so I would not expect anything more than a couple of thousands probably, but again, I am not an expert. Should our unfortunate friend have a full set of pictures of the watch, including the inside, this would probably help him to obtain a higher valuation from the insurance.
But I'd be surprised if the value was anything in the region of the $3,500 that @DON indicated.
