Hey guys, first post on here. Been looking to get an early 1960s (with the hanger S), gold SMDV with a ribbon or shell dial for some time now but haven’t had much luck.

Do you guys have any suggestions on the best way to find one at a fair price? Dealers seem to want an arm and a leg….

Hopeful future SMDV owner,
Christian

Welcome aboard. You’re looking for a rather specific and uncommon watch. If you don’t want to invest money (eg buy from a dealer), you’ll have to put in the legwork. Check eBay, C24, possibly other auction sites and do so very, very regularly. In the meantime, save pictures of other examples and look at as many as you can to get a good eye for those; if one comes up for a good price you will need to act quickly. The whole endeavor might well take a year or more, but it’ll be all the more rewarding once you hit gold. 😀

@MtV thanks for feedback, I will continue working through the web regularly and totally agree, the hunt will make it so much more worthwhile once I find it!

@DaveK i will try to be chatty but honestly, don’t have much to contribute being a newbie and all. This forum is amazing tho, so will be online a bit for sure!

@Brett2444 these are examples of what I am looking for.

As noted, you are searching for uncommon and desirable models, so you will need to be patient, and probably need to be prepared to act quickly and pay a premium when you find one. When you say that dealers want an arm and a leg, have you compared asking prices to auction sales? What is the mark-up they are asking? It may not be as crazy as you think, especially if your alternative is waiting for a long time to find one. A solid gold SMDV with that type of dial will not be cheap.

@Dan S Yeah, my expectations may be very off. I haven’t seen many available but I had a dealer that a friend of mine knows and he wanted a little bit over $3k for one that, in my opinion, wasn’t in great condition. I will keep looking - have wanted one for a while not but not in a rush.

Thanks,
Christian
