Looking for Info on an Inherited Omega Seamaster F300Hz

Hi, thanks for letting me register for the forum.

I recently inherited an Omega Seamaster watch which I know nothing about. It is potentially quite old but I really don't know.

I have looked online and tried to find out how to identify and value the watch but I'm not sure how to do this. Can anyone please advise? Should I take it to a jewellers and ask them to open the back? What should I look for?

I have uploaded a picture - if anyone knows more about this model I would greatly appreciate some information. There is a good chance I will be looking to sell the watch if it is of any value.

Many thanks.

There are folks that collect these. I have one, only. Owing to the difficulty of sourcing parts, and finding people who will repair them, they are not generally a grail watch. In the condition as shown above, this watch would not likely bring a throng of enthusiastic buyers. Check on line to see what prices are being asked these watches. Compare the cosmetic condition of watches for sale with the apparent rather sad condition of yours, and you’ll get an idea of what yours is worth. If it runs, that is one factor to consider. But if it doesn’t run.......... that is the colour of another horse.

I guess you're right. I compared them again and they really are small.

I think someone has had a go at cleaning the dial. The red background below the omega logo is not even on both sides. Some of the indices are missing paint.

I am a big fan of these watches, mainly because of the design rather than their technological prowess. I doubt you would receive a huge amount for this particular example because of its condition, perhaps around 200 tops.
If you inherited it from a close relative then a little TLC would improve its overall appearance. Leave the dial as it is.

Many thanks for your replies - they are really helpful.

When I took the photo I was surprised that it looked in such poor condition because it didn't seem that bad 'in person'. I guess the camera doesn't lie though!

I will probably take it to a jeweller to confirm the model and see if it can be cleaned up a bit. Then I'll decide what to do with it. It was inherited from a neighbour so doesn't have a huge amount of sentimental value to me but I might choose to keep it or give it to one of my kids if they are interested.

Thanks again.

I think most of the "bad" we are seeing, including the dial and indices, are lighting effects. Have chatted here recently about how modern high-def cameras show off the worst details. Is it running? If not take it to get a new battery but try to find a watchmaker, not a jeweler, as there are many stories about jewelers damaging watches because they have no idea what they are doing.

Jeweler does not equal watchmaker.

Hard to say what to do with it. I'm not familiar with that model. If it were from a relative, I'd say have it serviced by someone familiar with vintage Omegas and either wear it, or store it for your kids. Since this one doesn't have much sentimental value, who knows.

Unfortunately I have limited access to watchmakers where I live (remote part of Scotland) so I took it to my one and only local jeweller today. It isn't running at the moment so I wanted to replace the battery and check that it works.

Turns out the model number is 198.0044 which, I think, is maybe worth around £150. The jeweller didn't have the right kind of battery in stock so he's ordered it and then I'll know if it works.

I will probably offer it to my oldest son but if he's not too interested I may try to sell it.
