IT actually wears pretty well. I have tiny wrists, I took the liberty of adding some wrist shots for comparison.

Squale is an awesome watch. Its become my main kick around watch. I swim/boat in it. Wore it diving in Mexico a few weeks back. Looks good on rubber, deployant, and shark mesh.

How about Swiss Army? I used to have the chronograph version of this one. It was a great watch.

I think the stock of Glycine has tumbled a bit since it was bought out by Invicta. They've been dumping several models for $200, which is a good deal, but I can't get past the wiff of Invicta these days, which is a real shame. In your price range is also the Seiko Sumo, although I personally prefer the looks of the new SRP models.

There are literally a ton of microbrand divers out there though, many of which are well regarded.

My Tag Aquaracer, which I picked up used for $750, fills this role for me. Has an ETA movement that can be serviced by any competent watch maker for relatively low cost. Wears thin compared to most divers, which I consider a bonus. Conservative styling, so I can wear it from the beach to the office.

Love all the previous suggestions.
Jean Richard have some pretty nice pieces for the $. Love it or hate it design, but good movement and very nice finishing. But BIG.

Similar case style to above, Alpina Seastrong's are pretty nice too.

Another sight unseen piece is the Gavox Avidiver, but I've handled their earlier pieces and the finishing was comparable to Sinn; in other words, fantastic.

C.Ward Tridents seem to have a following:

Hamilton Scubas are rock solid as well

Thanks to everyone for all the excellent suggestions. I've been down many internet rabbit holes since posting this thread last night.

Glycine Combat Sub was a major contender, but the one that I would want seems to be discontinued - the 3863.198 G-D9:

The one that has taken its place has lume that is almost fluorescent yellow and makes a mess of the blue/orange combo of the dial and bezel.

Seiko has so many great models and I'm almost talked into buying the SKX for a third time, but I really want something a little different.

What I think I've landed on is a cheaper version of the Squale that I included in my first post:

It turns out that the Squale Matic is 44mm, so I think I will actually prefer the Atmos 50 anyways at 42mm.

Now to search the interwebs to try and find a gently used model and save a few bucks.

Does it have to be a diver? Have you looked at German fliegers? There are some great ones just under 1k. Laco and Stowa are excellent.

German watches....... got me thinking of Sinn

I'd love a Sinn - the 103 or 104 - but they're firmly out of my price range, I think.

I may have, in scouring the web for dive watches, fallen for a watch that is not at all what I was looking for:

This is what happens when you spend too much time on sales forums. The diver may have to take a back seat for now, unfortunately. Pretty sure the money is going to this one.

The SKX may be in play after all 😎

well this is actually an SKX007.....well started that way

or there's the monster (plenty inexpensive ones around)

or something made in Germany....lots of tech....fully titanium, wears a lot like an old 1120 seamaster (10.5mm thick) and no fart valve

For an everyday inexpensive diver you can't go passed a seiko skx007. You'd get three or four with your budget too!
Past not passed!
