·Hi everyone,
I recently inherited this Longines from my late father, who was a watchmaker. I received the watch in this condition and I’m trying to learn more about it.
The watch has a Longines cal. 27MS manually wound movement, and the inside caseback is stamped 6649 1 1. The case is 18k gold and measures approximately 37.5 mm excluding the crown, which seems quite large for a mid-1950s Longines dress watch.
Longines Heritage has confirmed by email that the movement serial number identifies a wristwatch bearing reference 6649. I prefer not to publish the full serial number publicly, but I can share that confirmation in redacted form if helpful.
I have tried searching for Longines reference 6649, but I have not been able to find another documented example so far. I have also requested an Extract from the Archives from Longines, but I’m still waiting for it.
A few things I’m curious about:
Has anyone here seen another Longines ref. 6649 before?
Could the “1 1” after the reference indicate a case, dial or material variant?
Does the overall design suggest a known model line, or possibly an early or parallel Conquest-era reference?
Any thoughts on the originality of the dial, hands, case and crown would also be very welcome.
I’m not trying to make any claims that it is unique, but the combination of ref. 6649, 18k gold, 37.5 mm size and cal. 27MS seems quite unusual to me.
I would really appreciate any thoughts, references, old catalogue images, auction examples or similar watches you may have seen.
Thanks!
Daniel
