You mean your wife didn’t laugh at you and call you geek? Oh, is that just me? 😵‍💫

I saw it and immediately identified it and then gave an estimate. And she said, "Oh, it will be interesting to see what the appraiser says." So the pressure was on.

Appraiser probably is less of a watch guru than most long term members here…so you could have also been ‘wrong’. Maybe he was just lucky…

I always love the expressions of disbelief in this age of instant information. Given this is a very rare bird in good shape, I thought the number should have been higher. I could have pictured the appraiser having an off camera convo with the owner, nit picking the watch, scaring him with auction fees and offering him 10k. (Just like pawn stars)

The appraiser is an auctioneer so I don't think he'd talk negatively about auction fees.

To be totally honest, I put a value of ~$25k on it, and the appraiser said $20k-$25k. Some examples obviously go significantly higher, but this was a LeCoultre (not JLC) and had some cosmetic issues, so I think it's realistic. I agree that the appraisers generally give more inflated values.

I always think of their appraised value as insurance value over street value.

Sometimes the appraiser says what type of value they are giving ... insurance, auction, retail, etc.
