Hi, did not see such thread here, anyone expecting special production Speedmaster to celebrate 50th anniversary of Apollo XVII? What could we expect? When it could be launched? Let’s discuss!
Thus far Apollo 17 ( December 1972) was the last manned lunar landing and both Moonwalkers stayed 75 hours on the lunar surface, performed 22 hours of lunar spacewalks collecting 111 kilograms Moon rock & samples. Omega already has done a few Apollo 17 themed Speedmaster chronographs and even scanned Eugene Cernan's NASA #28 Speedmaster 105.003 version which he wore on a steel mesh bracelet underneath the A7LB space suit. He wore this 105.003 during Gemini IX, Apollo 10 & 17 as a good luck charm... Over his Apollo 17 lunar space suit, Cernan wore NASA #67 Speedmaster 105.012-66 version. We can be 99.99% sure that Omega is going to do "something" for the 50th Apollo 17 anniversary, although most fans I have spoken during my most recent MoonwatchUniverse lecture/talk were looking forward to " 50 years Apollo-Soyuz " in 2025
When I was talking to the OB a few months ago the salesperson speculated that there would be something to commemorate Apollo XVII.
If I recall, the last Apollo 17 LE was in response to the death of Gene Cernan as a tribute and was hastily produced. I know I may be in the minority, but I think it was a poorly executed design put together with no thought regarding the mix of design elements. It just doesn't seem to look right. The mix of gold and white hands, odd bezel, red tipped chronograph hand, and racing style minute track was not executed well in my opinion and didn't do justice to the legacy of Cernan. If a new Apollo 17 LE is in the offering I hope a little more effort is put into the design.
I own this watch as well, so there are at least two guys with this watch who you know There were several reasons why I bought it: - it looks nice in flash to me, dark blue dial in combination with gold is pretty combination in my eyes (pics don’t do a justice); - the inner inlay of the watch box comes with strange typo in preprinted text (it says manking instead of mankind) which makes the watch for me even more collectible; - it fits my collection (hence I don’t care how it looks like I just want the watch otherwise the collection wouldn’t be complete albeit this is not a case as I consider the watch pretty); To be honest when I saw the new Chronomaster with blue dial, Apollo 17 45th Ann came across my mind immediately. Back to the topic - I hope Omega will come with a special model for 50th Ann of Apollo 17.
Here is one OF-Member and Speedy collector more that thinks the 45th Blue Apollo XVII is a great piece And I would love to see a 50th Anni as well
I love mine. It is a very under rated piece. If they do produce a 50th anniversary, it would not surprise me that it is not limited but a limited run.
If there will be no 50th Anni Apollo 17 Speedy .... ... maybe we get a Limited Edition "First OF-User going to the Moon" ...
How cool would it be if they didn’t do a damn thing? “We realised the moon sucks and no one cares anymore.”
I can imagine we won’t see a LE from Omega for a while… Isn’t it the original bracelet which comes with the Speedmaster 60th Ann?
I spoke with the manager of the Beverly Center boutique yesterday and so far he's heard absolutely nothing about an Apollo 17 LE or even SE. Nevertheless, he said he'd be surprised if nothing was done for the 50th anniversary.
Yes and No, its the 60th Anni Speedy, but with the Uncle Seiko Flatlink US1035. Fits perfect! BR Hans
