Keeping Under The Radar

With my watch collection growing fast I wondered what ‘tricks’ if any do forum members employed to keep new purchases under the radar? My better half does not really seem to twig one watch to the next. So keeping to a few similar designs has helped. All the Tag Carreras for example look the same!

My youngest daughter on the other hand has busted me, and she notices every single new!!!

Tricks that have jokingly come to mind:

“It’s a Fake”
“I’ve just changed the strap”
“It came with interchangeable cases”
“I bought so many they gave me this one for free”
“They offered me this one at a cracking deal when I bought you (my wife) a watch at the same time”

So what creative ploys have your employed for ‘just one more watch’?

Just for fun. Not encouraging deceipt. She’s actually well aware by now.

😁

I thought this thread was going to be about hiding new purchases from potential thieves, domestic workers, co-workers, contractors, etc. - not your wife.

I don't recommend hiding major financial transactions from your wife ... not a good plan.

It is meant as a bit of fun. Not a serious strategy! 😁

My wife gave up keeping track.
I'm the same way with her shoes 😉

“It wasn’t expensive.... look it’s only got a rubber strap. Omega are made by the same company that make Swatch”. 😁

An advantage of collecting only vintage Speedmasters.

They all look alike. 😉

I have used “it’s a replica, I fancy the real one but didn’t want to spend £5k on the real thing in case I don’t like it”

And “I just put a different strap on it”

To be fair she doesn’t really mind. The only time she commented recently was when I came home with a Panerai 510. “Now I do like that...!”

My wife gave up keeping track....

She use to ask, now she does not care. She mainly cares that I am always on this message board (wasting time). And does not quite comprehend why one would post a pic of the watch one is wearing on the message board for all to see. I am not sure if she thinks I am an idiot for posting or you all are for looking/liking them. 😀

True....just one odd man out.

Tracking this thread as I’m recently married and I need to learn the tried and true techniques. 😗

I think she was extremely suspicious as my fiancé, that my watches were more expensive than I was letting on to. Now that we have a joint acct, I need this hobby to become self sustaining or she will probably have a heart attack.

On the bright side she does have a shoe and purse habit that we still allow me to acquire 1-2 watches a year.

Why did I get married again?!?🤨

The Bill Davis Trio recorded a song in the early fifties whose chorus was:

“Catch ‘em young,
Treat ‘em rough,
Never tell ‘em nothing.”

I like the song a lot, but I’m not recommending that you follow the advice.

Mrs. Blufinz and I have separate accounts. I buy what I want with my money and she buys what she wants with hers.

No point in hiding, if she finds out later it will be much worse. I really sell it in the beginning when I’m ready to pull the trigger on something. Prior to that I start showing pictures of the watch and telling her what a great watch it is. Usually when I finally go to buy one she is also excited by that point. It’s a long game but it keeps it honest and avoids any drama. Honestly my wife is pretty cool though. As long as the mortgage is paid, kids are fed and I treat her to a something every now and then she could care less about my watches. She’s just happy I have a hobby.
