Unfortunately, that's the dark side of learning more, knowing about what you're looking at, and being willing to bid all the way. There comes a point when a $2000 frankenwatch is no longer good enough because it appears to have patina and you find it attractive, but you know that it has no value to anyone else, don't want to support the people who build them, and you'd feel like a fraud wearing it out in public. Catch-22: Ignorance may be bliss, but it's still ignorance.

I’ve been laying low for a while, but this one got me back in the game.

Been lusting after these for a loooong time. I’m glad I didn’t see this thread until after the auction had ended, because it would have made me very nervous. I appreciate the validation from so many knowledgeable collectors though, and I’m glad none of you went after it in earnest because it would have gotten ugly at the end😒
Didn’t want to post and jinx things until I had it in hand, but in the metal it is better than expected😀

Unfortunately, a piece like the OP watch doesn't come available to the general public in a no-reserve low-fee auction very often. One might wait years to have another opportunity like that...

My sentiments exactly. I still regret coming in second (or third?) on this one, for example🙁:

Dial looks very sharp for its age, but JLC retailed a few of these as late as the 1980's so the dial may be newer than the original production date...

The modern release is very faithful, but there are some subtle differences between this original dial and the 1983 version (commemorating the 150th anniversary of JLC). Among them are the open 6 and 9 on the original (left) and the closed 6 and 9 on the commemorative version (right).
There is also SWISS (left) vs SWISS MADE (right).

Well done, and congratulations!

I finally have that one restored, repaired, and on my wrist.

@MMMD Great post (and congrats)! I've been eyeing a triple date for a while now and didn't realize JLC released an anniversary edition in 1983. Differences are very subtle, thanks for pointing those out.

So just as an update, managed to buy the Omega Phase de Lune 1983 for £3.5. On the way to me ask we speak. Would love to hear your thoughts about it!

Hi all,

Curious if anyone has any opinion on the Triple Date below. I haven't seen too many examples with the black dial, so tough to compare. Does anyone have any opinion on whether this looks original? Much appreciated!

Here it is! - evidently a different watch than thread topic. I haven’t quite worked out how to set day/month/moonphase, seller says there are little pushers at the 2, 5, and 7 o’clock positions I can see but not sure how to push on them.

Looks fantastic! I was pretty close to bidding on that guy... but I have to stay focused 📖

You need to push those buttons with something small and thin, but hopefully soft enough to avoid scratches. I guess there is actually a specific tool for it, but a wooden toothpick works well.

Here's the key thing - is it making you happy? If you're wearing it to that wedding in a few months, will it make you feel pretty cool? If so, WIGH as we say! (My lad is still hoping to marry in August - we'll see... what could possibly go wrong?) 😗

Absolutely love it, much more stunning in person than the photos the seller and I could get out of it! Very much looking forwards to wearing it to the wedding!
