Congrats, mine from 1963 (87xxxx) says hello:

Don't polish anything, including the bracelet, even let the engraving on the clasp just like that, mine has GDR initial
bracelet scratches will match the case, beautiful to vintage geek like us 😉

FYI as well,
the dot mark on 6 (forming exclamation point with 6 marker) is basically stating AEC* approved Radium Dial, *Atomic Energy Commission, following their radiation level standards

Enjoy in good health!

Sounded familiar 😉.

He got it for 5k in the end.

He showed the watch to me when I met him once a few years back. unfortunately this is the only (crappy) pic I have of it, its in the middle of the case:

I‘m a firm believer, that honesty goes a long way in life and in watch collecting!

Cheers,

Max
Damn that is a killer selection of watches 😲

Yup, and that‘s just 1/10th of his collection 😉.
But enough of the hijaking, OP keep us posted on the progress of your new GMT 😀.

One of the best stories I have ever read. Congratulations! After reading this, I complained to my wife that this kind of thing never happens to me, but then she reminded me that I never check jewelry stores, estate sales, or pawn shops.

I have been doing it for years - antique stores, local hole-in-the wall jewelers, estate sales, etc. 99.99% of the time there is nothing but beat up old Bulovas and maybe a Hamilton or two. But it just takes one...

I do have a great selfie with the 98-year-old jeweler and picture of his storefront...

Maybe I missed it, but how has your wife taken to all of this?

Maybe I missed it, but how has your wife taken to all of this?

She trusted me (and you all) enough to let me spend 4x what I did on my birth year submariner, which was a huge splurge in itself...

Although, I may have convinced her that the jeweler wouldn’t take my offer because I would tell him that he could get $5k+ more if I market the watch online for him... I’m still somewhat surprised they took it.

Once I got home with it and had several messages with offers, she was more comfortable and okay with me getting it serviced, getting the bracelet fixed, and enjoying it for a while.

I wonder aloud what it would be like for me to stumble on a watch with such crazy upside but at a high entry point to begin with. I also think I'd spend the time to enjoy it for a while - like you say - and then pass it along. Enjoy it. Cherish the story. And take wristshots (by the way why have't we seen one on a leather strap at least!?! 😜).

😀

😀

I didn’t have a good strap on-hand, and once I thought the rotor may be hitting the caseback I decided to get it serviced ASAP.

It should be on a plane any minute on its way to Phillip Ridley...

First two pics from Phillip. I assume this means I will turn into a superhero if I wear the watch every day...

This is the stuff dreams are made of.
And it seems like it couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
Congrats, sounds like you really deserve this one, especially after years of "searching".

Hey, nice Radic. I'll have to get some pictures of some of my vintage Geiger counters with the few Radium watches I have.
