·The so-called “007” Omega Seamaster is called such not because of any connection with the James Bond films, but instead it’s reference, 176.007.
But I’ve just spotted a “007” being worn on screen in a James Bond film.
Unfortunately, the “007” isn’t worn by 007 (or even a main character). And, while the “007” is a fabulously 1970s model, the watch appears in the 1989 Licence to Kill - starring among the least celebrated actors to play Bond, Timothy Dalton.
Near the end and climax of the movie, Bond is in the drug lab of the baddies:
The “Chief Chemist,” played by Honoraro Magaloni, is rocking a blue dial 176.007
Here’s a pirated photo of the same model and dial variation:
This spurred a touch of research, to find that Licence To Kill was the final film in which Bond wore a Rolex (a 5513 sub); the next Bond film, Golden Eye, would have Pierce Brosnan wearing an Omega.
So, in a way, this 176.007 is a “transitional” model...
Other trivia:
The actor playing the Chief Chemist and wearing the 007 also appeared as Otheym in the 1984 film Dune:
A young Benicio del Toro plays the #2 baddie:
Wayne Newton also plays a baddie, while the pair of “Bond girls” are late-80’s-archetypes:
In all, Licence to Kill actually holds up pretty well compared to many, and the Chief Chemist brought a touch of 007 to 007 before Omega went 007.
