Warning, this is a picture heavy post inspired by @Duracuir1. Stick with me and there’s a fun surprise at the end. Lots of people like to complain about their mother-in-law but mine is awesome. She also loves clocks and watches and has accumulated tons of junkers over the years. She used to take the movements and dials and make them into art encasing them in clear resin. This morning I started talking about watches with her as I do and for some reason she invited me to look through the junk pile. She hasn’t touched it in about 10 years.

Sounded fun. So I start looking and almost immediately find something really cool (more later). Now the hunt was on and I had to go through everything. Most were indeed junk. But there was a lot of funny stuff so I started taking pictures to share with you all. First, the funny and interesting stuff.

The official watch of OF.

Movement is corroded but beautiful dial on this pocket watch.

Meow…

Looks comfortable.

Everyone here should get one of these. 😀

Group shot.

Missing the top strap but still totally sweet.

Let’s be friends.

Let’s not be friends.

Paid for in blood?

My wife said this used to be hers.

Ok, now the rescues. I’d like to try and bring a few of these back to life. Some runners and some not.

These small ladies watches are running and I’d like to give them a second life eventually.

Just wanted this movement. The rest is shot.

Missing bezel and kind of runs but it’s rough. Can’t get the back off.

Looked cool and I know the brand. Not running.

Also, a couple of bracelets. The small one should fit my Gruen with a bit of modification. One Skagen and a couple of cheapos.

Ok, finally the “jackpot”. Found right away and got my spidey-senses tingling. It’s running and the quickset day and date both work. May be magnetized she’s running about +1 per minute. Obviously needs a service ASAP. The second hand is not red but a bright neon orange and looks awesome. I assume it’s original because the watch looks unmolested. Tritium lume is in good shape and beautiful color. 40mm case, 45mm lug-to-lug, and 19mm lug width. I’m super jazzed about this thing! Totally my style and looks awesome on the wrist.

This is why you change spring bars I guess.

Cleaned it quick and poly watched the crystal. Cleaned under the bezel. Good as new!

If you made it this far thanks for reading! I appreciate the space to share and ramble on. -Alex

Sorry guys I'm fixing the post now. I edited one line and for some reason all of the pictures just went to the bottom.

Edit: Fixed now. These posts are stressful lol. First I accidentally hit "Post Thread" when it was only halfway finished then all my images broke. Amateur hour over here. ::facepalm1::

Thank you for taking the time to share this. That Elgin is pretty sweet! I fell in love with it when I saw it in the wruw thread today, so it was neat to get the back story. Though I must say, the lady bug is definitely giving the Elgin a run for it's money. It's really fun you can share this interest with your mother-in-law like this.

Did everyone else's eye instantly go straight to this like mine did? What is that?

Thanks! I need to edit a picture to try and capture the true color of the second hand. It pops like crazy. I didn't take the lady bug. It's all yours if you want it lol. Yes, it is cool thing to share with her. She picked it up from her father who I've posted before was a big collector and gave me most of my watches. She wears one of his watches every day. But she is also very utilitarian and does not seek out new stuff. When the family was divvying up Opa's watches she didn't even take one. She's happy with the one she has. I got 3 😀. And she's way more interested than my wife when I start carrying on about watches.

I'm pretty sure I checked that bracelet out and it was a Hong Kong special. I will check it again. It's super funny you picked that watch out because my MIL told me about it. It was her boyfriend's watch from when she was like 15! Haha. It looks like a Flightmaster case but I don't remember what it was. I will get a picture of it.

I’ve seen Hong Kong versions of the bead/brick. I think they were constructed differently than the JBC though.

Do you know if they're any good? Worth snagging? Maybe somebody here wants it.

If it’s about 6.5-7” long (clasp closed) not dented up and the endlinks are in good shape- considering the endlinks are a usable size (17.5,18,19,20) it could be worth about $25-40. If it were a JBC, then triple that.

Thanks. I'll check it out. If someone wants it I'll ship it for free. I could use the karma.
