IWC 3705 Re-edition

There is a lot of advertising for next week's upcoming Hodinkee / IWC collaboration (2/23/2021).

Based on what I am seeing - "An Icon Makes Its Encore" and "For Those Who Missed the 90s", it is pretty clear it will be a 3705 re-edition.

My best guess?
A 39mm IWC Pilot Chronograph watch - vintage styling to honor the IWC 3705 (aka re-edition) with a ceratanium case and limited to 1000 pieces - half available through Hodinkee and half through IWC network (since they are co-advertising this).

I am predicting a retail price of $7,900 (roughly $8,600 with tax). I am taking the base cost of the previous Hodinkee ceratanium release ($6,400) and adding $1,500 for the cost of the chronograph/date upgrade.

I would be very surprised if my guess is off.

If it looks good and is truly a 3705 re-edition at that price point, I think it would be hard to say no to this. The same great look at less than half of what a 3705 costs, with modern materials? IWCs generally don't hold their value well, but the Hodinkee ceratanium does just fine as will this, I think. Don't expect a premium on the secondary though anytime soon with that many pieces though...

At roughly $8,600 after tax and 1,000 pieces, how many of you would be a buyer?

Sounds interesting.

I love IWC having about 8 of them and enjoying every bit of it ( mind you I just sold the acquatimer)

this being said I like the simple pilots. The petit prince the Big Pilot etc. For chrono I like the Portuguese and portofino lines better. The pilots become too busy.

so, because of that, I probably would not buy it)

I never understood the fascination with this particular reference.. maybe I have to try it on first, but it never appealed to me as a watch I’d enjoy wearing. And it is so... busy in a way that I don’t quite like. Probably a pass, but I can see how someone who likes the aesthetic would pull the trigger.

Doesn't seem to be a lot of interest, but discovered there are actually going to be 2 separate releases. 1-2 days apart.

One seems to be through IWC which is a confirmed 3705 in 41mm ceratanium, 1000 pieces, limited to IWC.

Not sure what the Hodinkee release will be now... should be interesting.

The IWC isn't going to be a Hodinkee release - they have their own countdown clock. The Hodinkee release is coming from another brand that was quite vaunted in the 60s (and most definitely not in the 90s).

As for the 3705, my only hope is it's gonna be in the 41mm Spitfire Chrono case rather than the standard 43.

There appears to have been a press leak on the IWC. It is a confirmed 41mm ceratanium pilot - official tribute to 3705. Can find the details and pictures in google. Limited to 1000 pieces.

As mentioned above, Hodinkee release probably something entirely different. I got confused.

Looks like the IWC will probably be a pass for me at this time.

Got a link? Can't find it... maybe they got pulled.

41mm is great, now I just need to know it's got the proper vintage numerals and not the new-style ones on the current Chronograph lineup. Probably will but hey.

I think it's gonna be pretty nice, just have to wait and see what the price is.

Here are the pictures I found in google. If you google "Tribute to IWC 3705", it is one of the first links. I think you have to click the cache now to get to it.
41mm ceratanium case, in-house 69380 calibre, 46hr power reserve, 1000 pieces, exclusively available through IWC.

Ah yeah I see now. It's what I hoped it would be - essentially a ceramic Spitfire (41mm with the in-house) and yet I find myself not quite totally moved by it. Maybe it's because I think the Pilot's Watch lineup looks far better with the vintage-hued lume, but this one is not something I think I'm gonna jump at when it's released. We'll see as time goes on if I find myself hunting for one on the secondary, but for now I'm quite focused on the Hodinkee release on Tuesday, instead - that's gonna be an interesting one.

I agree. I too feel it is missing some warmth. Personally, would have preferred a 39 or 40mm case on this. I too will wait to see how it goes and will maybe purchase down the line.

Yeah, have you tried the new Spitfire chronograph on though? At 41mm it feels pretty right-sized, way better than the standard 43mm Chronograph models. I think a 39mm reissue would have been just a bit too close to the original honestly though

I think I'm also quite happy with my Doppelchrono, so I'll continue to set my sights on a nicely-priced secondhand in-house Spitfire chronograph - such a lovely watch, that

Price in euros was leaked on the watchprosite forum...12.7k euros incl. taxes...unfortunately the reference wasn't the Hodinkee edition but the Ceratanium Doppelchrono 😲

Oh wow, yeah there's no way I'll even glance at it at that price point. Ah well, more room in the wallet for other releases or vintage watches then.
