I've never understood the appeal of a 'Snoopy'...

A cartoon character on the dial?! What's that about?? 馃榾

Is there a Space travel link with the Snoopy character? What's the tie-in with Omega?

Omega never made a 'Garfield' Speedy, or 'Homer Simpson'. 馃槈

Just Googled! Interesting. 馃榾 I'm still not a fan, but we all have our own preferences.

The link between Omega and Snoopy stems from NASA's prestigious Silver Snoopy Award, given to Omega for its crucial role in the Apollo 13 mission's success, where the Speedmaster watch was used to time critical engine burns for the astronauts' safe return. Snoopy, NASA's safety mascot, symbolizes this award, leading Omega to release limited-edition Speedmaster watches featuring Snoopy imagery to commemorate the honor and the historic event, creating collectible timepieces.

Deserved so as working & surviving in the cold and dark LM "Aquarius" was a historic feat!
Interesting to note, NASA astronauts' feedback after Apollo 13, May 1970 (as in December 1966) requested a more legible Speedmaster, which finally came in the form of a "60 seconds" bezel, one year later for the prime & backup crews of the Apollo 15 mission, the first J-mission.
.
.
However, as always, NASA had already reserved the 3 Speedmaster chronographs which would fly on the Apollo 15 mission ( S/N 42, 45 and 47) and thus Tachym猫tre versions.
Finally in 1972, the Alaska Project II Speedmaster came a clear & legible "60 seconds" bezel.
.
.
Fast forward and the "60 seconds" bezel was again abandoned for the "radial dial" Alaska Project III but real Speedmaster aficionados came out with their own "60 seconds":

Long story short, 30 years ago, the "60 seconds" bezel got its place on the digital/analog Speedmaster X-33 chronograph prototype and remainded there since for all versions!
About Snoopy logo Speedmaster chronographs:
Thus far two Snoopy versions have been flown in space (2003 & Silver Snoopy).

Really want to learn about the Omega Speedmaster in spaceflight?
