It's just a plastic watch

From the article linked above:

Benny, 30, said he had decided to pay rather than to wait, and had spent $2,400 for one of the watches.

“It’s basically $2,000 over retail, but you can’t get an AP (Audemars Piguet) for less than $2,000, so I think it was a steal,” he said. “I’d rather pay a premium than come out and get it.”

That's ridiculous.

It's all silly but it helps Omega stay relevant so I guess that’s a good thing.

No it doesn’t. Why pay £££ for an Omega when you can pay £ for something that looks very similar and tells the time just as well. Damages the brand. Rolex don’t do faux Rolex.

The AP swatch damages omega?

Swatch and Omega benefit when Swatch sells more watches. Not sure what you are trying to say.

And the Omega x Swatch thing was pretty freaking successful.

I do t get why everyone’s so triggered by it. I kinda like it, but I said that about the moon swatch and never bought one.

Discussion is good but the hugely polarised opinions make me laugh

It is because we somehow associate the product with the behavior of the people buying it and sometimes it is hard to seperate those two again. When I see an article like that a part of my brain for a second or two would like to think that all people in line for one are like that. Of course they are not.

  • Are they fun watches? Probably.
  • Would I ever buy one? Not in a million years.
  • Do the world need more plastic watches? Probably not
  • Do people need to get their shit together and spend less time on social media and social media hype? Most definitely

That’s definitely a commentary from someone that has no clue about watches! 😵‍💫

I think it only damages the brand in the fact omega can’t properly handle security. I don’t blame omega for people acting like idiots but I’m seeing stores get sprayed with mace as people flip out about there not being enough plastic watches to go around.

It’s 2026 sell them online and everyone can chill.

I bought a swatch moonswatch two years ago and I wear it quite often, especially in the summer when it is hot. It has held up really well, no visible scratches and one battery change, which was free at the swatch shop.

I am not interested in a pocket watch, nor the hype, but I don't think they deserve the bashing they get. (They don't deserve the hype either, but I think they are better than the happy meal label some people stick on them)

Perhaps it will make pocket watches trendy and wrists watches passé and I will finally be able to afford some the wrist watches I’d love to own.

Moron tax that if the moonswatch stuff is anything to go by 6/9months you will be able to get them retail

Where's your evidence?
Perhaps pretty freaking successful for Swatch?
Maybe no so successful for Omega.

I posit, it's quite possibly an example of the modern day version of a race to the bottom. There's much more to unpack around all this type of thing and more than I have time for.
The world has gone mad.
IMO, if on wants a plastic watch with any kind of value. Best to stick with a G shock(which I have).
MoonSwatches are junk.
Swatchwatches are junk. Always have been and it's the very nature of the beast.

Which may excuse people’s behavior.
Bioceramic shit that stains the skin of the wearers wrist.
Don't get me started.

It's novel and I get people enjoy novelties.
A bit like some Oyster Perpetuals.
