My IWC 3706 Fliegerchronograph, my daily beater for the last 15-years.
I see you have that nato with the unforgiving metal rings set up just right. Archer and other nato dweebs would be proud 馃榿
My old beater was this 220 that I bought in only slightly less chewed condition, it wasn't that cheap but it came on a nice 1039. Loved this thing, combined the Speedmaster experience with the don't-care beater experience. Sadly stolen along with all my other watches last October.
So, after beginning again, I needed a beater since my only watch left was the Apollo XI 50th I was wearing that day, and that is certainly not a beater! So, I started on the lower end with an inexpensive yet tough beater I could wear during flights. I found Mint Evolutive, who are making classically-proportioned watches with quick-change bezels and NH35 movements. I paid a little less than $300 for this "Divemaster" and in return I've gotten a truly well-designed and finished 39mm dive watch that keeps better-than-chronometer time.
I recently removed the bezel spring to enable the bezel to rotate bidirectionally (if a bit loose) so now it's a mainstay.
Vintage beater: Beater watches are great, but I also like to have a slightly less valuable vintage watch to wear in situations that might not necessarily be very rough, but where I want something a bit nicer than a beater even though there could be exposure to sand/dust or water /sweat etc. I picked up this Cronel skindiver for cheap off eBay and it fits the bill wonderfully!
And then there's this Ingersoll, which I thought had nice Explorer vibes and was going for $100 on Drop.com (Massdrop) a couple weeks ago. It feels every bit as cheap as it was but it's sorta all right, and definitely worthy of beater duty 馃榾
As sad as your situation made/makes me, I am delighted to see how you are rebuilding and taking a new direction in what you鈥檙e going after.
It shows there can be life after watch collector death.
