If I had a wine refrigerator I would say yes... As I don't have one, the answer is no...

My wife received some work award where she received points to buy a gift from a website. The items were not the greatest, and there was nothing we really wanted. We bought a wine fridge as the best option and stuck it in the basement. When the compressor kicked on, it seemed noisy. We just gave it away.

When I was in the buying process for my wine fridge, I remember indeed that there was considerable difference in the noise wine fridges made, as well as the energy use. Mine is by no means silent, but it's acceptable.

By the way - if you are looking for a wine fridge in your garage, than I would always opt for a model like this one below. It will be less noisy and consume less energy

Since we are re-doing our kitchen we had to get a new wine fridge.
With the new layout, we had to ditch our big one in favor of a small 30 bottle fridge...which is really fine because there is no need for us to have over 30 bottles of chilled wine lol.
We got this Kalamera fridge:

Haven't plugged it in yet, but I'll let you all know if it was any good.
We actually bought it from Wayfair for about $100 cheaper, but get this...
It showed up yesterday and the door hinge was damaged from shipping. It also had some shallow dents but since it is going between cabinets I didn't care. But the door definitely needed to be addressed.
I wasn't looking forward to having to ship this thing back but to my surprise Wayfair said, just keep it and we'll send you a new one!
What?! I mean, I guess...
So now I'll have 2?

Put the extra one in a basement or storeroom, and use it for the good stuff that needs to be cellared for a few years.

Appears you paid twice too much.

otherwise, they have an unstable business model.

Oh I'm sure I did, but it was still $100 less than on the manufactures website.
I have 2 other stories about Wayfair.
First being my mother in law bought two nightstands for her bedroom.
They came, she decided they were too small (still pretty big in terms of bedside nightstands) and instead of returning them, Wayfair told her to just donate them and even offered a suggestion as to where to do it.
My brother in law ordered a 2 pane interior wood barn door. The door and hardware shipped separately. The hardware became lost.
They sent him a whole other barn door and hardware lol.
I don't understand.

Reminds me of Indochino (the MTM suit maker). I knew the person whom all "returns" were being sent to. His job was to receive them and cut them up/burn them. Essentially, they just had to be unusable. Indochino did NOT want them sent back.

I've had this 72 bottle Danby for about 14 years now I think - I bought it off of Craigslist for $200. For a while there was an issue where it wouldn't stay cold - it would turn on if you unplugged it, but would eventually stop cycling. At first I thought it was the start solenoid for the compressor, but replacing that had no effect. Eventually I tracked down a replacement control board a couple years ago for a newer model, the only difference being that my model used an incandescent light inside and the new models use LED lighting. Don't hook up the lead for the lighting and it controls the rest of the fridge no problem.

yes

I plugged it in last night and it is definitely a little louder than my old one it seems.
But of course, it was not buried in cabinetry with a thick slab of granite countertop over it. So that may quiet it some.
I need to play with it more but initial impressions aren't great.
The racks seem flimsy. But maybe less so when there are some bottles stacked on them.
And maybe I can adjust it, but the interior light is either on or off. Opening/closing the door makes no difference, so that is kind of annoying.
That, and the light is also like, blue LED's. Also not super great IMO.
But hey, as long as my wine is about 55 degrees and my wife is happy, all is well.

The fridge itself isn't too loud.

However, it's contents keep raising a fuss.

I have a couple, one (the large one) is pretty much silent while the smaller one is closer to sounding like a kitchen refrigerator; not loud but not at all silent when the compressor turns on. Large is in our garage, small in out kitchen. I've owned a few and did a consulting gig for a company that makes them so a few thoughts:

The truly silent ones usually have an electrostatic cooling system which sort of work but will never allow you to have a real consistent temp and generally cant go lower than 55f/13c. They also cant be fixed (at a reasonable cost) and are less reliable, but usually much less expensive initially. A real refrigeration compressor adds volume/noise but increases reliability, lifespan, gives the ability to fix not replace, and generally will allow for a lower temp. Higher initial cost but a better quality product.

I like our big box, it does the job especially for red wine getting longer storage, but I really love the small one. It is 2 sided as you see but more importantly they are separate temp zones so you can either go one side red, one side white, or do wine in half and beer/soda in the other half like we do. Most wine fridges dont allow you to get cold enough for beer. So I add a bit of noise for the convenience of dual temp zones. Its not loud but you do hear it if you are napping on the couch.

Large is rated a 160 bottles but closer to 125 with larger Pinot bottles included. Small is 42 wine bottles or 21 wine bottles and 60 cans.

I would like to work the fact that I own a wine refrigerator into every conversation I have, but due to the ongoing pandemic I don't get to speak with anyone outside my immediate family. All of them are well aware that we have a wine refrigerator because it's in our living room and is noticeably loud. I disassembled it and cleaned the fans and frowned sternly at all the other parts, but it's still pretty noisy.

Checking in on various wine fridge sellers, I've found that a typical wine fridge is about as loud as a dishwasher, about 35-45 dB. A dishwasher running 24-7, like a wine refrigerator, would be pretty annoying, but of course that kind of noise is temporary. Our living room and kitchen are all one room—what we call LDK in Japan—and space is at a premium, so there's not really anywhere else we can put it. It's on a wooden floor without a lot of dampening objects around it, so my next move will be to put it on a foam mat, though I doubt that will do much.

So, does anyone else on this forum understand my suffering? Is this a typical rookie-wine-fridge-owner reaction? Have I mentioned that I have a wine refrigerator at home?

Yep, after I got it and set it up, it sounded like neighboring house's air conditioner going on the fritz again, nope, it was our wine fridge.
