Considering buying this. But I would like some advice as to whether it is a likely repaint. Also a value estimate if / if not repainted would be great. Thanks
The dial has been refinished. Hard to assess the value without a photo of the movement and inside of the case back. My guess is that it’s worth far less than the asking price.
There are new members joining every week asking the same questions - I'd suggest you have a look through the forum and see what knowledge is already out there. Also, have a look through some of the many threads on Constellations and compare this one with photos of original specimens Hope you take this the right way - we could say that the finish of the black paint is wrong or that the text looks off, but that won't enable you to make decisions on your own on later occasions. Also, have a go at introducing yourself so we know a bit about you and what you are looking for - welcome to OF
Welcome @Bernt You are right to ask the question With any black dial Connie (Omega) you should start with the premise that it is a redial and set about looking for the ‘tell’ In this case you need look no further than the minute ticks which randomly sit on on/over/ next to the pie pan edge. Different references of Constellations have slight variations in their dials but Omega would never have released a watch with a dial like this. You will need to study the different Constellation references to glean the subtle variations on pie pan dials. Did you google the reference inside the caseback - The case back does looks odd but only because it belongs to a later C-case Connie not a round case hidden-crown Connie. hope that helps
Also, as you can see the reference number in the caseback, have a go at googling that. It will reveal something interesting
Thank you guys for views and advice. It has prevented me from buying a dog. I was actually quite far in the purchase process, but with your help I was able to pull the emergency brakes. I understand that buying a vintage pie pan, and a black dialed one in particular, is not for beginners
https://omegaforums.net/threads/black-to-be-168-005.24943/ Use the below dial from @styggpyggeno1 in the thread above as your yardstick
Great info from the OmegaLords. Just a tip from me. Stainless case, gold medallion? Plated case, gold medallion?
Those markers made me think of sutures, the way they are overlapping the edge. Like a true Frankenstein's monster.
With black dials, always enlarge the picture as far as possible without losing definition then look at the fonts, minute marker positioning and signs of paint creep. This is one of the better redials but the paint finish is a giveaway. Original paint should have a certain sheen / lustre but the rediallers seem to have a hard time reproducing that, and this one has a matt finish like a black hole sucking in light. It becomes quite obvious once you've looked at enough of them.
