is that a non destructive test? The acid tests I have seen I thought you make a scratch in the metal to apply the solution?

You are right, a little scratch. Best way would be a XRF gun, but they are
extremely expensive.

I have one of these - I've been looking for a replacement dial for getting on 2 years now. I'd always assumed it was rolled gold as I haven't been able to find any hallmarks.

My recollection is that it is 32mm.

I think I have the answer to our quest. During an idle moment last month it occurred to me that one of mine has lugs for female spring bars at 12 but, as they presumably have snapped off, holes drilled at the 6. It's taken me while to find time but I think we can agree on either gold-filled or gold-capped.

Not terribly conclusive on one lug:


But pretty emphatic when we get to the other one.



Can't believe it's taken me so long to work out that I had the answer all along.
