All kidding aside folks we do a credit check on members during your first 3 months here. You guys can deny it and hide it from your spouses if you like, but If you are not over a 6 figure net worth, we ban you.

Of course there are a few exceptions, in @efauser 's case we did a credit check on his Dentist instead

Hope to see you all at the next Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance , Trev is showing his new classic Aston Martin 馃憤

and the gynecologists should be buying watches for the rest of us 馃槈

I personally know one gynecologist with an extremely honorable double-digit collection of modern Speedmasters. 馃憤

Asked him why no interest for vintage - he replied "Same preferences as in my daily work" ::rimshot::

Another note, the best way to assess whether you should buy it is to just sit on the idea for a couple years. I realized after waiting for 2-3 years that my fondness for the watch wasn't a passing fancy. So buy the time i got it, I knew I'd be happy with the purchase.

Reminds me of something that happened to me years ago. I was over this guy's house at a party, and I was wearing a garden-variety two-tone Rolex Datejust, about $4000, when he looks at my wrist, and says, "Whoa, look at mister fancy-pants with his Rolex!" I just smiled and thought, geez, what a dip-shit: out in his driveway was an $80,000 fishing boat on a trailer. Just because his hobby has him wearing tattered, fishy-smelling clothes, he rationalized it that somehow, I was being more extravagant. People are so strange about money.

I've had a similar experience with a BMW that I had just purchased. It was a 3-year old off-lease, and I paid around $35K. A co-worker was all over me, 'must be nice to afford a BMW', 'how can you afford a BMW' etc. I pointed out that his brand new Ford F-250 cost a lot more than the Bimmer. He never said another word about the car.

@dsio

Hi,

I'm an architect, and I was wondering if I could afford an Aston Martin?

I say follow your gut. I am not a millionaire and just started my watch addiction six or so months ago. No regrets whatsoever and the feeling you get when you look at that beautiful watch ticking away on your wrist is priceless.

I agree with "dsio" especially and most everyone else as well. 10K for a vintage moonwatch is hard to swallow but you do not have to have something valuable to have something vintage and nice that will give you many years of service and joy. On another note, all the dentists in my area make a lot more than most or all of the engineers that work at Kennedy Space Center near me! But no matter what you make, just spend what makes you comfortable. Cost of half a year at college at a state uni for either of my sons IS A LOT OF MONEY.

Based on the fact that something like 80% of the world's population lives on about $10 per day, yes this hobby is for the rich certainly. If you narrow your scope to the Western world where most people have much more than those 80%, it's still a hobby for the relatively wealthy. If you narrow the scope further to practicing dentists in the Western world, my guess is this is not an expensive hobby, and you are just cheap.

The bottom line is that you have to be comfortable with what you spend...if you are not comfortable for whatever reason, then don't spend the money.

Talking numbers: the median income in America is around 59K to 62K.

Back in the early 70's, a speedy costed around 200 bucks, inflation corrected that would be around US$ 1,297.00 in today's dollars.

Main issue is that mechanical watches were tools in the 70's and in this days it became a luxury item. Who *really* needs a watch to tell time when we got cellphones? Even worst, mechanical (which implies maintenance each 5-7 years)?.

As a result to this new reality, watches prices increased above inflation i.e. a Speedy will cost around 4-5K instead of 1.3K if only inflation corrected.

If you make 3x the median income in USA, you should be able to easily afford 3x US$ 1.3 = $ 3900,00. That happens to be more than the price for a *new* grey market speedmaster professional or plenty enough for a good second hand speedy probably still under warranty.
