Is this a hobby for the super rich?

Oh and also, people spend money differently. If you're a watch nerd, you'd be super happy every time you look down at your wrist and see that dream watch of yours. Some computer nerds spend thousands of dollars upgrading a computer. Some spend a lot of money pimping out a truck.

It’s just another type of hobby. Some people like cars, some like vacations etc.

I know for me I was never big into watches but wanted to buy a nice watch to hand down to my son. That was seven years ago.

In those seven years I bought a few, sold a few, but also learned a ton. I also have something that will last a lifetime.

If you can afford it and really want one do it. If it does not work out or an interest sell and move on.

I’m a 30 something dentist who’s been eyeing my first Omega (speedmaster Pro) but haven’t been able to justify purchasing one. Am I just too darn cheap or are most of you multimillionaires?
I know plenty of people who don't have the watch bug and scoff at me for wearing "expensive" watches yet they spend a lot of money on stuff I would never own or do. It is more about what you want. There is no justification for buying stuff like this. It is a want. Take the guilt and justification out of it and see if this is something you really want. If you can afford it and want it, buy it. If you can't afford it but want it, save up for it. If not, forget about it and move on.

I used to get myself stuff. My third child is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I may have $4,000 or so at the end of the month but then I save $ hundreds per child per month for college, I pay down the mortgage quicker because if something happened or I couldn’t work, I wouldn’t want to have to move and change their schools, then anything left I throw into the savings because who knows what they’ll need. I think having kids has overtaken my ability to buy myself stuff. I needed a new vehicle and my wife asked me to get an SUV or large car to fit the kids so I purchased the cheapest new SUV for sale. No thought about what I might have wanted. My one nice suit was too baggy on me so I asked my friend where he gets his nice looking suits and we wears custom fitted Hugo Boss suits for about $1000. My wife told me to go get one so instead I go to Kohl’s and buy a clearanced one (fits well and looks good) for $120. I think deep down I feel that spending unnecessary money is robbing my kids future. Sorry to use this as a psychology session but thanks to all of your helpful reasoning, I think I’m seeing the light.

Here's how I look at it. Many folks (myself included) will spend several thousand dollars to go on a nice vacation. Money well spent, but when the vacation is over, what do you have? Memories and photos that no one wants to look at, lol. Spend several thousand dollars on a watch that you will enjoy for many, many years, potentially pass on to a someone you love, or at the very least, sell it for most of what you paid, is a great deal.

I say, get that Speedmaster Pro and wear it every day 👍

I basically follow this mentality but by basically spending less on trips. the watches are income i would have spent on other items of entertainment

You're a smart guy in a good steady profession but, most important, you've got a new child on the way tomorrow. Congratulations, I'm sure everyone here on OF wishes you and your wife/partner the very best for tomorrow, a safe delivery and a healthy new boy/girl. Forget about watches for now, focus on tomorrow and bringing home your new arrival. I think I understand your anxiety more now, the new arrival brings you more responsibilities and more expenses but also more joy than any watch will ever bring you. Watches can wait.

Hello,

I’m a 30 something dentist who’s been eyeing my first Omega (speedmaster Pro) but haven’t been able to justify purchasing one. Am I just too darn cheap or are most of you multimillionaires? The reason I started this thread is I guess I want you guys to help me rationalize to myself why I should buy it.

Thanks in advance.

No, not most of us anyway. There aren't very many collectors who are wondering how they're gonna pay the rent by the 5th, but they certainly don't need to be multimillionaires. Say you have a small collection of ten watches worth an average of $3000 each, that would only by $30K worth. Don't need to be super rich for that. Fund your retirement and the kids' college fund, and after that have some fun 😀

@bucksandreds - is daily flossing necessary? I try, but to be honest, I am more likely to wear a Speedmaster daily that I am to floss.

My first Omega was a 3572.50 bought 6+ years ago.

I bet @bucksandreds didn't think his post 15 hours ago would generate almost 2000 clicks and 90 posts.

I wish you and your family the best for tomorrow or whenever your new baby decides to show his or herself. Keep up the good hard work and being a great family man as you seem to be doing already.

I haven't been around here much lately, but ΩF's enabling skills have taken a steep decline.

First and foremost. Congratulations on the sweat addition to your family. I hope your wife and the baby are healthy and happy.

I have three kids and I have them in private school. I pay an arm and a leg for that. I established a 529 savings plan for college and my wife and I have a life insurance policy to provide for them in the unfortunate event that we are not around to do so. With all of that said, you absolutely must do something for yourself every now and then. Paying down the mortgage is a great idea, but not a mandatory thing. Save for a rainy day and budget accordingly, but at the end of the day you really must splurge (whether it’s $50 or $5,000). If you don’t, you will eventually start to feel like a slave. Don’t get me wrong. If your financial situation does not allow for a large purchase, then don’t do it. Paying for the necessary living expense take precedence. Don’t go into debt to floss a nice watch.

In short. All I am trying to say is. Find that balance that works for you.

@bucksandreds

Go buy a nice seiko SKX for about 200, and pass it down to your new kid.

It’s a great watch respected by watch nerds rich and not so rich. Great history, tough as nails, and looks better the more used it is.

My father who runs a decent sized bank wears one, and so does the kid at my coffee shop. It makes every list of affordable watches for watch snobs. Buy some cheap 22mm nato straps to dress it down for the weekend and be more colorful, then back on the bracelet for work.

It helps a lot to be irresponsible with money... once I embraced that concept fully, I was off to the races with my watch hobby.

Sorry I meant to type "it". People take "it" more seriously, the watch. A speedmaster vs a MVMT...
MVMT, the cringe ::facepalm1::

I honestly don’t believe buying a modern Speedy for each kid (so 3...congrats on the incoming 😀 ) will be detrimental to your 8 figures or their future security. But listen carefully: if you do, close your account here, don’t join instagram (or shut it down too), and stay the heck away from vintage. The first modern Speedy is like the gateway drug (especially if you hunker after them).
