Is this a good Moonwatch deal

I am looking at used Moonwatches and have found one with the following details:

  • 2020 model
  • 1863 movement
  • original box and papers, minus warranty card
  • leather strap
  • sapphire sandwich, not hesalite
  • very good condition except for a tiny nick on the bezel, which you really have to look for to notice

The seller would let it go for £3300 (this is GBP). Part of me would like the latest movement, but the prices for the new ones are beyond my budget for now and the foreseeable so I’m being realistic with what I can get.

This seems to me to be a good deal, based on the prices I’ve seen for other models (e.g. £4,000 for a 2013 or 2015, albeit with metal bracelets instead of leather).

But I’d appreciate thoughts from people with more experience than me.

I’m not that up on modern prices but I’d prefer to buy with a bracelet. A ‘98 model, full kit with bracelet sold on eBay last week for £2950. I’d have rather bought that.

Just for the bracelet, or is there another reason? I prefer the idea of a watch that's 4 years old to one that's 26 years old

I recently bought a 3570.50 from '98 and it's an amazing watch, I found it on Chrono24 and it was such a positive experience that I bought my Seamaster 2225.80 from '06 there also.

I'd suggest doing research on actual selling prices (not asking prices) of watches without the bracelet.

Even a used bracelet is going to set you back at least £400 so it makes a material difference to the price.

Forget paying extra for the old style bracelet. If you can get a good deal on one with a strap buy it, if you ever want to upgrade to an Omega bracelet get the new 3861 version, far superior to the old one, and it fits fine on the older case.

From what I have seen for this exact watch with the leather strap, the price I can get is around £600 below market.

I was asking if your reason for preferring a ‘98 was due to the bracelet or if there are other differences with the watch that you prefer.

The idea of the leather has grown on me. I think it complements the black dial really nicely, and my AT is a bracelet so it gives me two different options for my Omegas

Good to know!

Sounds like a deal.
Feels like I’ll have to get it. At that price I’m confident if I regret it I could get out without taking a big loss, and it seems like the kind of deal that won’t get again if I decide to put it off for a year.

Only issue with no bracelet is reselling it. I personally wear my Speedmasters on leather as well, I love it… but like having the bracelet tucked away in case I one day decide to sell.

There are a few modern Speedies for sale here on the forum for very reasonable prices but you would need to have them shipped into England from the US I think. Ex. There is a 3861 on bracelet in the Private Sales section for $4,250 USD which is a steal.

That depends on condition !
Condition is excellent, one small nick in the bezel (small enough the seller could have not mentioned it), otherwise looks pretty much mint. I guess that's a benefit of the leather strap over a metal bracelet
