Counterfeit or the real deal?

My guess is, it is counterfeit (big dots). The seller has his suspicions as well.

"AT SOME TIME IN THE PAST THE ORIGINAL OWNER FOR REASONS UNKNOWN HAD THE “SPEEDMASTER” AND THE“HIPPOCAMPUS” PROFESSIONALLY REMOVED. THEY DID A FANTASTIC JOB AND IT LOOKS FACTORY ORIGINAL AND VERY CLEAN. OTHER THAN THAT THE CASE IS NEAR MINT AND UNPOLISHED."

At least the seller discloses that it maybe an aftermarket bezel. Why in the world would the original owner remove the hippocampus and speedmaster from the back?

It is not unusual to see watches engraved with a personal sentiment or personal identification number of some sort. The next owner has the engraving wiped clean.

I’m not buying the dial story either. If it were an 80s service dial, it would have t-markings (and no step). This is a modern dial that’s been faux-patina lumed.
