I still feel like they peaked with the PAM104, the in-house movements got off to an extremely rocky start, a good mate bought a PAM321 and it was nothing but trouble, returned it twice for repair when brand new as it kept stopping, they ended up accusing him of abusing it despite it being perfect externally.

After sitting in a drawer for ages, I took it to my vintage watchmaker, who @watchyouwant also uses, and as he took it apart he's feeling sharp unfinished edges on parts, and just shakes his head and goes "They aren't very good at making their own". He serviced it, it ran for a week on his winder, and it stopped again in his shop.

He tore it down and found that one of the pallet jewels was ever so slightly too far back to properly engage with the escape wheel, when freshly serviced, the fresh oil must have given just enough engagement to keep it engaging and running for a week or two each time. He adjusted the pallet fork, de-burred a few parts that should have been better finished, and it ran for many years after that.

Their service people probably looked at the parts, saw no wear and assumed it was fine, likely not considering a manufacturing defect relating to poor tolerances.

good morning , this is very interesting context with educating story,
My first encounter with Panerai was back in 2007, I went to a car dealership one day and had my Omega seamaster 300 James Bond on my wrist , still have it with all papers box and even receipt $1800 in 1996, the salesman noticed it and we stared talking about watches, then he asked me, have you heard about Panerai? I’m like , what’s panerai, he was talking about it with such enthusiasm even he didn’t have one , he gave me contact to a watch dealer a little too far from me that I would consider traveling, but weeks went by , still thinking , I have to check this Panerai hahah , so I went to see what this think is about, walked in and asked he gentleman to show me this mysterious Pam 😊 so , when I got to the display case and saw maybe 10 of them , couldn’t take my eyes away, a love at first sight you may say, was difficult to choose it I choose the Pam 24 , placed it on my wrist and that was it I was hooked for good , then my son expressed his interest and admiration to it so after about few months I gave him the watch, later he sold it anyways , I felt something was missing on my wrist so I went back an got the Pam 164 , few weeks later I noticed problem with the crown not pulling and setting time correctly , so went back again , this time he had just received new watches, I spotted the 243, couldn’t resist and exchange it, that was beginning of 2009 , $6k this time son wouldn’t touch this one lol, next some time later went back again and got the Pam 212 flyback , which is a safe Quinn , only 3 times on wrist , $8200, I could off get the 8 day one ,should off , at this time I was in a pam mode haha, then on eBay I found this listing for Pam 87H , met the seller in person I got it , in a safe not used complete package, a stunning dial, this is the one last year production before the 243 case style change, only 200 made , so, this is my long story, but on the value point, that is different story 😄 on my good old times travels skiing in Zermatt , I stoped in Zurich, there is a old watch store by the Zurich lake bridge, this man had probably 250 omegas on display , I asked about 321 ,he only had 2 in speedmasters , he showed me 2915 mint, 6k franks , till today regretting not get it , I asked if he would swap it for my pam 243 that I had on my wrist , he started Laughing, really Laughing , saying , ah no , not a chance , what you have my friend is a $6k designers watch with $600 movement inside , so that’s that , have I gotten the 2915 , oh Ah would be holly grail today, by him saying about the Pam movement I went back to the dealer and told him /asked him , he didn’t show interest to elaborate , was in 2012, but I’m happily putting on my 243 knowing that there is nothing special inside of it, and selling ? who wants to loose so much, thank you for reply and great happy Thursday everyone, kazd 🤗🌞❤️♎️

Awww... Just as I was sorta warming up to them.

WRUW has gradually influenced me to look more kindly at some of the Panerai models and their styling.

I have to mention though that I would want to take a bench grinder to some with those ghastly protected crowns. Y'all can be grateful that I do not rule the watch styling world for I would Issue an edict outlawing public display of all protected crowns and crown guards. I loathe their appearance. I prefer the appearance of crowns dangling out there unguarded.

Really!

There are a few watches with crown guards here at The Home For Wayward Watches and they are worn, but I don't have to like 'em. I have been on the fence for a decade over the acquisition of a Rolex no-date Sub as new as the 14060 variants and may yet, but could wish the Sub had no crown guards.

I know. I will go stand in the corner now.

Where did I put my Dremel tool after I last used it?

Good morning and , hah yes , the No crown guard models are much more pleasing . And wear well on all occasions, but it is unique design for love or hate hehe, I personally like then there are other models no guard , possibly more comfortable to wear as these big boys take a lot of space on the wrist and require good size wrist to be sure, another aspect I looked at and contemplated is, the depth specs , a1000 meters !! 🙃 who will go that deep and survive Ah another gimmick, I started looking at some of my divers lately I asked myself this question , why I was so attracted to this diving depth illusionary appeal , but many years passed and that didn’t stop me from going crazy like a lunatic collecting them , I have Pam’s 1000 meters , planet ocean 600 meters, seamaster quantum of solace 600 meters , Rolex sea dweller 4000 meters And
and my very first seamaster 300 James Bond 300 meters , this one actually started my collecting passion, so , what’s with all this Meters hahaha , how you even utilize this capacity , and the not so funny fact is I don’t even dive , if I go for a swim I’ll use my surfers watch the Shark , indestructible in my opinion, so that is my story and take , makes me wonder again, why I and many others choose the watches that not only don’t fit under shirt sleeve and never come close to water, maybe it’s just a kind of infatuation , long story , sorry , everyone have a great day, kazd,🤗🌞❤️♎️ here are some of my Divers lol, i guess I should join a scuba duba diving club to try and test all these , what you think guys, 😄🌝

Wowzers! I see several nice divers there that I would own and wear, and love it. Most especially those last three Omega Seamasters! And, even that Sea Dweller.

Oh, face it! I would own and wear all of 'em!

I am so pitiful that my watches, divers included, never even see the inside of the shower for I will not wet a watch. They get serviced then look pleadingly at me as if to say: "It is safe to get back in the water now." Like a remonstrative parent, I just shake a finger at them and tell them: "No, means no!"

Ah ha, thank you , very heart warming reply, yes my divers never experienced water , they are the safe queen / prince type, in safe for good 15 years , but lately I’m revisiting few pieces just to feast my eyes, thinking to myself , why I even own so many and not enjoying them, well, that probably will and should change, not too many occasions to show them off , maybe going on a hiking trip, yes they deserve to worn , loved and adorned, good day , thanks again, and yes the 300s and 120 s are lovely with lots of classic character to it, kazd, I’m including pics something unusual here , would you wear this one , I got it 20 years ago , never used it, a redone omega pocket watch movement 38.5 LT, I think from 1940, redone to aviators specs , what you think , it is not only big It’s huge boy, 55 mm, what you think , 👋

I have been warped by too much Omega Forums consumption of the yen for originality.

I would not take a pocket watch conversion seriously, however, no there is no harm in having a mongrel watch or two for fun-zies. Re-dials and customized could fit in the same category. The watch owner is free to enjoy them as he likes.

I have the Shameless Hussy. An Ebay purchase made prior to joining Omega Forums and learning to mind my manners and "behave properly." Shameless Hussy is a re-dialed 1959 Omega Seamaster with 520 movement. I liked the dial, but only later learned that it was a re-dial and that a Seamaster 520 never appeared with this dial. Still, the watch runs like a freight train, keeps quite good time, and remains the only watch I own that receives regular admiring comments from non-watch people. I term these folks as "The Great Unwatched."

Hello , it is a beautiful looking watch even if the dial is redone , looks a good job done by someone , and the movement ? Well it is inside only you know it , enjoy and wear proudly in good health, on my monster pocket watch conversion, I didn’t buy the watch for itself but, for the movement 38.5 LT. reason !? I have my great uncle omega pocket watch that needs resurrection and has this movement , but when I got it , I procrastinated on gutting the watch as I liked it, and now years later still looking for decent movement for my g uncle omega to be fixed, call me crazy , this is my story, I have dozens of different movements a acquired from the watch scrap yard , longines , IWC, Lucien paccard , wondering if maybe would look into making custom cases , is there a place to turn to for case making? Good day everyone, kazd 🤗🌞❤️♎️

It would have to be a labor of love to prepare a case to fit a movement for there is no chance that the investment would be worth while.

All sorts of Longines and IWC cases appear on Ebay all the time. Lucien Piccard? That would be harder to find though many brands used the same basic A. Schild movements and could be adapted if the watchmaker wanted to, had the time, and could be induced through the applicatoin of copious funds to take on the task.

After sitting in a drawer for ages, I took it to my vintage watchmaker, who @watchyouwant also uses, and as he took it apart he's feeling sharp unfinished edges on parts, and just shakes his head and goes "They aren't very good at making their own". hello and thank you for this informative story , I had similar experience but with the Pam 164, crown not pulling setting time correct, do I exchanged it for the 243, as to value, on one of my skiing trips to zermatt I stoped in Zurich to visit little store by the Zurich lake bridge , this man had like 250 omegas on display , I tried to swap my 243 for 2998 speedmaster ,mint , the guy started laughing really laughing and said , not a chance , what you have my friend is a $6k designers watch with $600 movement inside, that got me thinking , this was back year 2012, so this is my story, kazd,🤗🌞❤️♎️
